This may take an enormous amount of memory to do.
If Humminbird does it, it will make the units more expensive,
as if they aren't already expensive enough.

I hate to say it, but Humminbird is already more $$ than Lowrance and they support it. This ability becomes even more valuable when scrolling to mark a GPS waypoint at the scrolled back positon, FORGOT to mention that! BTW, memory is CHEAP, it's a commodity...

I don't believe that Lowrance or any other Sonar manufacturer can do this.

It's true that you can record on both units to an SD card, then while viewing a recording, create new waypoints based on what's on the recording.  So, in essence, you are reviewing the history and making waypoints from it.  But ONLY if you have made a recording to an SD card.

To keep a real-time, ongoing cache of recent history is just
a plain waste of memory.  I think these units barely have enough
memory to do what they were designed to do.

I disagree, when you add up all the options, Lowrance is more expensive than Humminbird.

to clarify, Lowrance does not have an unlimited ability how to scroll back , what it does have is the ability to scroll back farther than the visible screen maybe 1.5 to 2 screens back from what is visible, this not only allows you to see the data  , but also the ability to set a waypoint from this view. This is similar to the function on Humminbird, however would just the ability to scroll back and set your waypoint further back than what is a immediately visible on the screen
