Title: New 897c SI combo question
Post by: cmdrako on April 02, 2010, 12:38:52 PM
Does it matter what type of SD card I buy?  Does just a standard SD card work or does it take a specific kind sold by humminbird?

There is no Humminbird SD card but we do recommend using a SanDisk brand SD or SDHC memory card.  If you are just going to do software updates and GPS data transfers than you can buy the smallest SD card you can find and it will still be larger than you need.  If you are planning on making many screen snapshots I would get at least a 1GB SD card and would recommend you look at the Ultra II cards made by SanDisk.  If you want to do Sonar Recordings than I would get one of the fast Extreme III SDHC memory cards of at least a 4GB sizem maybe larger.

By size here I am talking memory capacity and not the physical size of the SD or SDHC card.  We use the original standard full sized SD cards but you could buy a Micro SD card and use one of the Micro to full size adapters if you wanted to.

I purchased the SanDisk Extreme SDHC Card. It's got 4 GB of memory and the read/write speed is 30 MB/sec

It's working good on my 898c SI as far as I can tell.  I used this card to save some waypoints.  Have not figured out how to use the recording feature.

Moose1am,
first of all welcome to the forum!

If you want to do recordings, you have to be in advanced user mode. Choose this by going to the set up tab and scroll down to "User Mode". Set this to "Advanced".
Next you go to the recording/snapshot screen and then press menu. From the dropdown menu which will show up you choose "Start recording" by scrolling down to it and then use the right cursor to start it.

You can go back to any screen while recording. A message icon in the middle of the screens saying "Record" will show and remind you that the recording is in process. The only thing you cannot do is making a snapshot while the recording is running (you can do this later when you view the recordings with HumViewer or YellowFin on your PC).

If you want to stop the recording, you just press the menu button again in any view and the scroll down to "Stop Recording" and use the right cursor to stop it. Easy as this.

The recordings and snapshot will be recorded on your SD card, so there is no need to export them like the Nav Data. Keep the recordings at a max. length of around 30 minutes. This will make it easier to handle them later in HumViewer / YellowFin.

Good luck and regards from Germany
Harry
