trouble with ver.6.6
« on: February 07, 2013, 04:53:19 PM »
was running ver 6.25 with no problems ,until I loaded ver 6.6.
Now I only have about 5 views and none of them are of 2d,down image
,side image .I went to the chart views in menu and they are just not available.meaning 2d,down, and si.(neither hidden or visable).I guess i need to start from scratch but don't know how .
Does resetting to default get rid of the current version so I can try to upload the version again.

I've had to reload version 6.6 on my 1198c several times and the only way i could reload is load the older version than reload then reload the newer.

bobxxx:
Resetting to default only sets the user changeable settings back
to their starting values.  It has nothing to do with what
software version you have.

You should reset settings to default before and after any software
update.

bobxxx,
Does this happen while your Humminbird unit is on the boat?

Check and see if the Sonar menu is set to “On” or “Off”.  You should be able to see the Sonar menu by pressing the Power button if you are running the 6.600 software.

Thanks for the comeback,Greg.
The upgrade was done at home and I was watching a recording.
More info:The sonar is on.dialog box says ver.6.6. Another dialog box pops up telling me to retract the 360 probe. Also just noticed that I do not have a sonar menu.My menu's across the top are alarms, nav, chart,
setup, views, and accessories.Whether recording is off or on makes no difference. Also noticed that watching recording ,I have all but sonar.
I went to simulation and I had a sonar menu and sonar readings.Thought simulation was a  recording .I'll leave unit as is in case you have more questions. My lakes are frozen over so all this is at home.798 ci hd si

Bob,
With the unit on and running in the normal mode, try resetting the menus back to the factory defaults by using the Restore Defaults menu or pressing the power button and seeing what the Sonar menu setting is on.  Change it to “On” if it not already there.

Hi again,
I turned unit on,hit menu then to normal.Hit power which showed sonar on.Went to setup menu and "sonar" was on.Went to "restore defaults"and restored then went back and checked to see both sonar tabs were to on.Went to menu and still no sonar menu.If I go to menu "views" I have -birds eye view, chart view, snapshot & rec, self test, acc test(which shows no gps),and diagnostic view.

I just put 6.6 on my 798ci HD SI and 898c.  Zero hiccups.  All looks good in the garage.  Ethernet settings, sonar settings, etc.  Can't find anything odd anywhere.

Thanks,
I'll download to 6.25 ver then if all ok ,go back to 6.6.
everything ok with ver 6.25 .all views and sonar ok.I tried again, after resetting defaults ,loaded a freshly downloaded 6.6 ver.from HB website
and still got same results. No sonar tabs.si or di or 2d. Both sonar tabs on.I don't know what Else to do.Funny I can upload 6.25 numerous times and all ok.I can upload 6.6 ok but it just won't load the sonar menu's

We've been having discussions about this for awhile now.  Hopefully Greg can yell loud enough to get it back on the 798's!

Bobxxx's problem really vexes me because Wolfs4evr installed 6.600 on identical 798cihdsi.  Right?
Wondering if you and Wolfs4evr have identical hardware accessories(transducers/GPS/etc)?

And i remember previous forum posts where users would redownload or reinstall a release and get it working.
How's that possible in today's computer and data-transmission with all the current technological error-checking.
Highly unlikely!  It confuses me and I'm a computer guy.

But OK.

Bobxxx:
Can you see your transducer in your HB units diagnostic screens?  Can you see if all your hardware that exisits is detected?

How did you perform the release update?
Did you insert the SD release card into a running unit?
Did you insert the SD release card into a unit, then power it up?
Should not make a difference, but I always use the same method which ever one.

When you copy the new release .bin from your home computer to the SD card you might wish to perform a Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media operation prior to removing the SD card to insure all the output is finsihed.  I know .... techie stuff ... I apologize.

Restore defaults before and after release  update.

You can fix/diagnostic by getting your HB 798 down to it local basics(unit/transducer/gps). ie no interlink, ethernet, etc.

Hope you get it going...

If one is re-installing it due to "issues" I would get a fresh D/L of the update verse using the one you already have on your pc in case it is corrupted.

My 798cihdsi is on the bow connected to the CSI transducer on the TM.  Using internal GPS and connected via Ethernet to the 898 on the console that uses it's oem external GPS puck and HDSI transducer.  Pretty straight up set-up.

Now if I was using the the US2 TD in my Terrova I am not sure what one would do as far as sonar selection on the 798 with this update...

With my set-up not a concern.

First,thanks for all your help.
For clarity, when I say I have no sonar menu,I also mean I don't have any views of 2d,di and si and their combo's.The transducer is not connected since the unit is in house.I will go back and install 6.25 and if all is okay,I will jot down what I do .I will down load the 6.25 directly from this web site to sd card.I will download 6.6 directly from hb website to sd card.I have used 2 different sd cards and both sd slots.
I'll be back and give you the sequences I used hoping it works.

I think I would try to upgrade with the transducer connected.

I'm pretty sure you need a transducer connected in order to see any menus or views that are transducer related.  Assuming you're testing the unit with no transducer connected.

Well I'm back with my sad report.I Turned unit on and reset defaults.Turned unit off. Turned unit back on and installed card that was directly loaded from this website to sd card (5.84).unit said 5.84 already loaded.I went thru all menu's and views and also watched a recording. The unit was fine.Next I restored defaults and turned unit off.
I removed the card and deleted the 5.84 ver. along with the 5.84 profile the unit threw on,and downloaded the 6.6 ver. directly from the HB website to my sd card.
Turned unit on,restored defaults, and turned unit off.Turned unit back on and inserted 6.6 ver into slot.Unit ask to replace 5.84 with 6.6 answered yes then no if I wanted to abort.Unit installed 6.6 ver.and restarted unit .Did another restore defaults and looked thru simulation menu's and views and all looked ok.On accessories,I had 7 items including item on"360".Also saw 360 adds to alarm menu for probe operation.all looked promising. Then I turned unit off so I could get out of simulation mode.Restarted and selected normal from menu ,noticed right away ,no sonar menu or sonar views. On accessories view,I had only screenshots. No add on's ie:gps,360.cannon shot, links.
You guys have tried, and I put a lot of wear & tear on the unit but I guess humminbird will have to figure this one out.I'll just go back to ver.5.84 til I get more info.

Did you wait a little while it takes about a min fo rthe unit to recognize the 360 if you don't have the 360 hook up i don't think you ever will see it in your acessories menu

Bob when you tried this was your unit actually connected to a transducer?
I’m guessing no if you had to force in into the Normal operation mode.  If a transducer was connected it should have automatically entered the Normal operation mode.

I keep seeing this on many different forums about fresh downloading the firmware. This again shows Humminbird's juvenile approach to the firmware process.

With the possibility of a bad firmware download causing a unit to be bricked......

WHY the heck isn't Humminbird providing us with an MD5 checksum along with the firmware, so we can check to make sure we have a good download before we try to apply the firmware.

every time I try to install 6.6 ,I use a fresh download directly from HB and directly to sd card.I emailed HB and they said to send it in so they could reprogram it for 61 bucks.Why should I send in if it works fine with all versions but 6.6..I'll just wait till next version.( in a day or 2}
I'll try to hook transducer when it thaws out since that's only thing left. Maybe 6.6 needs transducer unlike 6.25 & 5.84.

Damn,
How many times have to tried to install it?

Advice:
Before and after you do any update, reset settings to default.
Check the file size of the download before you download it,
and after downloading it to the SD card.

If possible (before an update), back up all NAV data to an SD card, and delete all
NAV data from unit, and format the units's NAV directories.
Do update, reset to default, then import your NAV
data back onto your machine.

If the software has bugs in it, no amount of updating to the
same version will fix anything.

Note: Version 6.6 does have known problems.
Problems may differ, depending on what unit you have.

I would not pay Humminbird to do an update for me if I had a working unit.

SAGA HAS ENDED AND PATIENT LIVES
Thanks to everyone,especially HB Greg,Wolfs4ever and Gixxer01.
Everything kept pointing to the transducer, but since boat was in storage,I did not have a transducer. For 2 yrs. ,I have spent winters watching my my recordings, and also upgrading when a new version came out.Well, when they changed from 6.24,to 6.6 versions, they neglected to say"you must have transducer hooked up." So, until, they change something ,I won't be able to watch my recordings on my 798 ci hd si.(without  a transducer)
Thanks All
Bob
PS:HB told me to be sure that in setup, that the "demonstration" mode was set to "off" .Mine was on. everything seems to be working ,even recordings.I don't know if I could upgrade without transducer but I'm not going to try just yet.goodbye ,I hope.

I got it now bobxxx.  Had to actually try this on a unit first and have found that it is also the same on a 998c Si unit as well.  I suspect that it is the same on all units running the 6.600 software.  I’m not sure that this is a bug though or just a change in how things are handled.

If you want to watch your sonar recordings and are running the 6.600 software; just force your unit into the Simulator mode, like you were doing with the Normal mode, and it will play fine.

Hi Greg
what I have noticed ,is that,in setup menu ,if demonstration is off.unit will boot past start up screen and sonar views will be shone as if transducer is hooked up and recordings can also be viewed. If demostration mode is on,the unit will boot into start up menu and if you select normal, their will be no sonar menu.I'm still not sure about the transducer needed to be hooked or not but I consider that you solved my Probs.
Thanks
Bob
