Title: Linking a 998 and 788
Post by: majflyboy on April 19, 2010, 07:51:25 PM
I have the 998 on the console and 788 on the bow with the interlink ordered and should arrive by the end of the month.  I've looked around this site and seen several suggestions about how to link them if in this situation or another.  My question is, with my situation, how should I link them and what should I expect to get out of them, ie, will I mark waypoints from either or both units, do I need to disable the GPS on the 788, etc?  Thanks for any comments.

Is the 788 an external GPS version?  If so I would connect them like shown below (you did not mention any other accessories like the WeatherSense).
What you should expect (if both units are set to fully participate in the InterLink system), would be for each unit to have a copy of the tracks, routes and waypoints that are on the other unit and that when any new waypoint is marked on either unit that it will automatically show up on the other unit.

My 788 is internal GPS, thought all 788's were.  Still curious about how to read.

The 788 has the internal GPS?  Than see below.
What are you meaning by: “Still curious about how to read”?

Thanks Greg, your diagram nailed it for me.  Looks like the short cords with the inline "pucks" plug directly into the longer ten and twenty foot cables.  I was confused by that too.  Thanks again.

The choke cables can be used with the ten and twenty foot cables or not – or even used in place of if they will reach.  You need them if you are experiencing trolling motor interference but they can be used as a short extension cable in place of the longer ones if needed.

HB Greg, just another thank you for posting that diagram for my specific combination of HB units.  I just finished the interlink installation on the boat (I did have to bring your diagram back up on my PC just to make sure).  Still don't know how to use it properly yet, but with your help and by reading others posts here I'll learn.

Does it matter if the y cable is before or after  the choke cable. I put my choke cable to the head unit of my 1197 then the y cable, one side to the GPS  antenna and the other to the comm port on the interlink. I then put the 20' comm cable from the interlink to my choke cable the on to the 788. Both units should have the 4 times faster gps speeds.  Have not had it out of the shop yet hope this set up will work as well.

Frisco,
I don’t know if that will make any difference at all.  Seems to me like it would be better as the noise is getting filtered out as close to the unit as is possible.  Let me know please of you have any problems.  I am assuming here that you had some sort of trolling motor interference and this is why you installed the choke cables; am I right?

I finally got the interlink install figured out.  I had plugged unit #1 wire into the RS232 (#1) port on the back of the 998 instead of taking the GPS plug out, putting the y-cord in and plugging in the GPS and interlink.  Thanks again, several of you posted helpful info.

no I have not even tried the stuff yet, brand new boat just finished install yesterday and am trying it out this week. Do the choke cables filter signals coming into the unit.  Or do the chokes hamper the performance in any way.

The Choke Cables are there to filter the signals coming onto the unit but they will also filter any signal passing through them whether that be going into or out of the unit.  No it should not affect the performance as these were selected to pass through the frequencies that we want and filter out the others.
