Mounting a 1197 on the bow
« on: October 02, 2012, 12:52:04 PM »
I am concerned about the amount of pounding that the unit will take up on the bow. Thinking about trying to use some shock mounts. Has anyone experienced any issues with a 1197 or 1198 mounted on the bow? I really don't want to use a RAM mount. Plan to hard mount to deck. Any issues? Thanks Txswede

I have an 1197 mounted with a Ram mount on the front of my boat and have not had any problems.  The ram mount gives me flexibility to move the unit in a lot of positions to get the best view.

Also I remove and reinstall my units from the boat while transporting the boat over the roads and when the boat is in my shop, I loosen the ram mount removing the compression on the rubber ball mounts (this was suggested my another person).

I have my unit mounted with a Ram mount also and have not had any issues. While transporting and storing my boat, I remove my unit. I have not had any issues.

Have not heard of any specific issues with ram mounting on a bow except for:
1) Theft  if you dont remove it unless you have secure storage or docking
2) Climate issues if you dont cover it when not in use.

Guys, Thanks for the replys. What size Ram Mount are you using (ball size and arm length)? When you run do you loosen the mount and lay the unit down flat on the deck, or keep it upright? Seems it would move a lot when running in fairly rough water.
Thanks, texswede

I use a D size. I do not loosen it while underway.

I purchased RAM Mounting Systems RAM-D-111U-C heavy duty RAM from Amazon for $83.20 with free shipping.  These mounts have worked very well for me.
