Using same maps for 2 units....
« on: August 11, 2010, 11:18:27 PM »
Lets say I have a 798c si at the console and a 788 ci at the bow. I have navionics maps in the 798. Is there a way to link just the maps/waypoints from the 798 to the 788 or do I have to buy another navionics map? I don't want the 788 at the bow reading the 798's gps signal from the transom...just its maps.  ;) The way I understand the interlink is that I have to use the same gps signal for both units.

I have a 788 ci on the bow and a 898 si at the console.  They are interlinked.  I can share waypoints but not maps.  I have the same map chip in both units.. :'(

I too would like for my two units to share a single map card.  Is this a possible software upgrade?

I don’t think that this is possible for two reasons:
#1 is that it would take a lot of communication between the units to keep the map on the second unit updated.  The only way I think that this could be done is with an Ethernet connection which only some of the newer units have.  I am also not sure how much this would tie up the processors in both units…
#2 is that I doubt that Navionics would allow this.  They are in the business of selling maps and mapping chips and so would not want to allow this.  Not sure what legal rights they have but I bet it would get “messy” if we could do this.
