998 gps module
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:59:37 AM »
I tried using my 998 with a portable setup that included the 16 channel gps module from my old 797, but the unit would not find a satellite fix.  It works fine on my boat with the 50 channel module that it came with.  Is there a reason why the 16 channel module will not work with the 998?  I rarely, but sometimes, use the portable setup, but would like to be able to use it without purchasing a new 50 channel gps module.  Thanks.

Not sure about the 998, but on our 1197 we could use the 16 or 50..

The 98 series units do have a different internal code from the previous 97 units so there could be something going on there..

Have you called customer support?

No, I haven't called support yet.  On the diagnostics menu, it appeared to be looking at satellites, but not a strong signal.  That module was working ok, last time I used it with the 797.  I may try it again later today, and give it another chance.  Thanks.

Tommy,
I have not heard that the newer Linux units cannot use the GR16 GPS Receiver so I am perplexed why it would not work.
Do you have a strong enough charge on your portable battery?

I charged the battery before using it, I do remember the unit indicated pretty close to 12 volts on the diagnostic screen, but don't remember exactly what it was.  I will try it again over this weekend.  Thanks for the responses.

OK, I was able to get the gps to work today, by removing the 998 from the mounting bracket.  Apparently the physical size of my unit, or possible electronic interference, is the problem.  The gps module and mounting bracket are on the lid of a 5 gallon bucket, with the battery and excess wiring inside the bucket.  I have the transducer mounted on an aluminum strip that is mounted to the transom via a c-clamp when in use.  I will need to reconfigure my setup a little, and hopefully it will still work just fine when I need it.  Not something I use often.

BWK, could the unit have been blocking the signal in any way. Or just enough that the 16 would not work but the 50 would.
Just a thought?

Let us know furthur findings.

I don't use the 50 on my portable unit, it is dedicated to my boat, but, yes, I think the unit was somehow blocking the signal to the 16 channel module.  As soon as I can, I'm going to modify the way I mount everything of the portable and make it more reliable.  It took a couple of minutes to acquire location, and when I replaced the unit into the mount bracket, the signal quickly deteriorated.  Thanks.
