what to get?
« on: December 18, 2010, 04:40:20 PM »
i'm going crazy, i've learned alot since i first found this site, but i'm trying to figure out if i should purchase a 2010 998c si combo, or wait and get the new 798. the screen size is attractive on the 900 series, but i don't want to buy old technolgy. i'm also getting a terrova 55/ip/us2 and i want to be able to have the units possibly work together if the technology comes available. if you had $1800.00 to throw at a hb, which one would you suggest??

I would add $199 to the budget and get an 1197 from BBG marine, which I just did ;D   http://www.bbgmarine.com/p10909/Humminbird-1197C-SI-10.4-FREE-OVERNIGHT-SHIPPING-!!!!/product_info.html

I spent several monthes trying to decide myself, going back and forth between the 789ci si and the 898c si.  The 898 seemed the best way to get a little more size and also get the full spectrum of frequencies for si and the ethernet port.  I missed out on the $699 Cabelas deal for the 2010 798ci si :'(, but when the 1197 came down so much in price I decided to go with it.  It has everything the 1198 will have except a little dimmer screen and not as fast a processor.  (It has been a good enough unit to keep KVD happy ;))

The 1197 is a REALLY good deal right now and you will never wish you had got a bigger one.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

I see that you are from Michigan, fishing is probably on hold for a bit.

First off I agree that the 1197 is a better purchase, the larger the screen the better.  But if I were you I would wait until Jan/Feb to jump, the 2011 models should (?) drop the prices of the 2010 models.  And I would be interested in getting a 2011  1198 model if the price is right.  This is a long time purchase and the latest technology is always the best way to go.

Again the larger the screen the better happier you will be.

I'm ready to buy the 898.  Anyone think the 998 will drop in price come Jan/Feb.  I would much rather wait and get a 998 for close to the same price as the 898 now.

Don't expect any price reduction due to year model changes. The 898 and 998 are not being replaced with newer models. Both of those were new for 2010.
You can find some below suggested retail prices at some dealers but you have to do some research to find those deals.

Wayne is right on the spot. with any purchase it always pays to shop around.
In store final shopping is the best purchase plan, but there are deals on the internet.
However be aware of internet purchasing. I think Wayne and several others have, in the past,  posted about internet shoping.
Make sure yuou have check the source before paying.
2011 will see marketing plans to sell items and you very well may see bargins in electronics and accessories. Sonar is certainly to be included.
One thing that does influence sales is volume or bulk buying by the store.
Stores can get better prices when they buy in bulk. Sonar is not as influenced but it does happen.
It has been posted here that prior to selecting or buying, post a item here asking questions and look for helpful answers.
There is a lot of knowledge and experience on this forum

I got mine from J&H Products on line.  Took a little while to receive but they have great prices.

I have ordered from JandH Products personally and spoke with them on the phone several times.  They are highly recommended if you are going to purchase off the internet.  Call them directly, and see if they can do a little better than the advertised price. ;) ;) ;D

Good Luck,
