Compatible home made map for fishing
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:58:40 AM »
Hi,
I am trying to load a detailed map that I made for a small lake near home (in Europe) but I don't know how.
Is it possible? What kind of file format should be?
Thanks

The only available method right now is to convert your contour lines to GPS tracks, and import them in that fashion.  Each track is limited to something like 20,000 points, which is pretty generous, but you are limited to 50 tracks.

And after you upload them to your unit, you have to manually edit each track appearance to be a solid, thick line, rather than individual dots.

Very cumbersome, but effective.

I have overlaid an old map (with houses now under water) with a new one.
I can do like you said, but it will take a lot of work
Thanks anyway.

You can import a TIF picture file into Google Earth and geo-reference the corners, to give the correct scale.  Then, draw track lines over the contours, and export them as .kml files, which can be converted to .gpx files with GPSBabel.

That's my current method of choice, anyway.  Sigh.

If they would just provide a geo-referencing utility in HumminbirdPC, we could all make our own maps pretty easily, from a multitude of sources.   I still fail to understand why they have not done so, since adequate maps are really not available for the vast majority of the world, and these products clearly have an international market.
