1198 Clarity on TM
« on: November 17, 2011, 05:09:43 AM »
I have my 1198 mounted up front on the trolling motor. The clarity of the images are not that great either on sonar , SI or DI. They're readable but not as clear as I think they could be. I used a transducer saver which is a rigid mount not allowing for any adjustments. My boat is heavier in the stern thus the boat doesn't sit level. In my thinking the beam is shooting at an angle and not straight down. I was wondering if I switched to a regular TM mount allowing me to tilt the transducer back if maybe that would help? My 798 on the back has 300% better images than the 1198 does. I have made adjustments to the setting but still not much help. Just asking in case someone has encountered this before.

The standard TM mount hardware will not allow adjustment of the forward to back angle of the transducer either unless you use some type of shim under the transducer – which you may be able to do with the transducer saver bracket you have now.

HB xducers are very sensitive to angle and trim.  You might want to research brackets in this site or on the net.
Placement is everything.

Doug Vahrenberg has a series of seminars one of them is about set up for side imaging on the Trolling motor.  After I watched all 9 of his seminar videos I am resetting my 1197.  You should take a little time and review all of them for a better understanding on setting up and getting the most out of the units.

go to -->> http://www.dougvahrenberg.com/Videos.html  <-- This will answer some of your questions.

After watching these I am going to re-install one of my SI transducers on the trolling motor.

Rdendy take your boat on the trailer simulate your water line by cranking your front front trailer jack put your trolling
motor down take and cut a wedge out of anything that you can get ahold of teflon, plastic, etc.put between your TM and Transducer
put your clamps on and your good to go. Gary

I modified the trolling motor mount I had for my one LOW 2d sonar and hooked it to the transducer that came with my 997.  It can be easily rotated to sit level and then lock the bolts down to keep it in place.  All I needed was some nuts and washers to fill in the gap.
