Title: Another transducer question...
Post by: whit on May 03, 2010, 08:47:47 PM
Finally took the boat out with the 798c si. Everything worked great at lower speeds. My question/problem is that when I get about 20-25 mph my depth shows 2.5 ft. I understand that the side imaging isn't gonna work at that speed as mine goes black, but I figured the depth would show. Here are some pics of the transducer(maybe)......does it need to go up or down or is it working right? [attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3]

You have a multi-step hull with the transducer on the second step. The transducer is mostly out of the water when on plane.

I think it looks good in the pics.   but if that left corner is catching air it could mess it up.

Whats my other option? Seems a bad place to mount it up under boat on first step. Any thoughts?

Think dropping it a little would help or hurt?

Dropping it will probably help but will expose the transducer to being hit by logs, stumps or other "stuff" in the water.
What we are finding on our transducer is an adjustable bracket to lower or raise the transducer depending on speed.   Then a thru the hull for higher speeds.
We use a trolling motor shaft and mount to do this.  A Johnny Ray adapter for the transducer on the bottom of the shaft.

I see. Can I use a thru the hull transducer along with the transom mount on the same unit? If so, whats needed to do this?

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure this is common knowledge to most, but this is my first depth finder and I'm learning.  ;)

Greg, Jolly Roger and some others can get the best hook up for you.  Splitters or wye cables.

the best part of this forum is you can be new or experienced and every one learns.

There is no dumb question here and the folks who have been around or have been using the units are the most willing bunch of guys I have ever seen for sharing information freely and with a desire to help.

keep asking questions.  that is how we learn.

Yes you can. What you need is a y-cable to split up the SI signal and the 2D signal. And a thru the hull transducer as well of course.

Here's the y-cable:

And here are the transducers:
The first one is a "shoot through" type which can be epoxied into the hull if you have a single layer fiberglass boat.the sonar signal will be send and received through the fiberglass.

The next two transducers are "break through" transducer, means you have to drill a hole into your boat and the transducer will stick out underneath your boat.

or this one:

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure this is common knowledge to most, but this is my first depth finder and I'm learning.  ;)

As Chuck already mentioned correctly:
There are NO dumb questions here, because we all once started out as beginners and were happy and glad that we found answers to our (dumb  ;D) questions.

Super!! Thanks for the info.  :) So if I buy the y-cable and the transducer, nothing else is required to do? No settings to change in the unit? It will separate SI signal and the 2D signal automatically and give me depth readings at higher speeds?

Again...thanks a lot!

You got it Whit,
just hook up the transducers to the cable and the cable to the head unit and you're good to go.

Humminbird offers a "high speed kit" as well, but there the Y-cable is substituted by a transducer switch, which will allow you to manually switch between the SI transducer for trolling speed and the 2D transducer for high speed runs.http://store.humminbird.cust.shopatron.com/products/307283?product_id=b1441cec5f6d87b0cddda21768142d1a (http://store.humminbird.cust.shopatron.com/products/307283?product_id=b1441cec5f6d87b0cddda21768142d1a)

With the Y-cable and the extra transducer you're better off I think.
