Need some help. What might this be??
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:06:43 PM »
Hi all,

this ones are driving me nuts. Since two weeks I'm trying to find out what this is. I even did a dive at the first (lower) waypoint, but didn't find anything on the ground.

Here's a SI shot of the same two "depressions" from the opposite direction and driving right over them.

Same shot in 2D

This one is a shot of the Eastern target in a Southern heading.

I didn't dive at this one yet and would like to hear your opinions before I go down again. Maybe one of you had something like this in the past and knows what to look for.

Thanks and regards
Harry

Definately depressions. You can see the shadows. Is this in the lake or ocean? Could be large ship anchor depressions. Is the bottom soft there?

Thanks for your hint Whizzo!!!
But the next sea would be the Northern Sea or the Mediterenian Sea and both are about 500 Km away from Lake Constance. Lake Constance is in Southern Germany and borders to Switzerland and Austria. So no big ships around here.

A shot down Lancaster Bomber was laying in this area. I was speculating that this might be the place where it was laying on the bottom and the weight of the airplane has compressed the ground there.
The Bomber was salvaged in the 50s and I wondered if the bottom has not already recovered from that incident. My Dad dove there in the 70s and recovered a trim flap of the bomber. He still has it somewhere at home.
Another thing is the distance between the two depressions, which is about 80 metres. A bit too far even for a big airplane I think.

Looks like the layer of the monster of Loch Constance.

I haven't the faintest idea. Never seen something like this.

Harry, the 1st blue screen at the lower left appears to be just as you said.  Small Depressions.  could be s fish bed or just small depressions.  The top left seems to be a smooth area of the bottom.

Thanks for your ideas so far!

I don't think that these are artillery craters Whizzo. There were no heavy pieces around here. The bomber was crippled on the raid on Friedrichshafen in April 1944 ( http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=1019 ) and ditched in the lake at Gaienhofen about 40 Km away from Friedrichshafen.

Hopefully the monster has no appetite for diver Hendrik. I'm busy enough to check the bottom and don't want to check my six as well  ;D.

Chuck, I've never heard of fish beds. What does that mean?

Regards and thanks again
Harry

Fish beds are areas where the fish scoop out the bottom and lay eggs in the depression.  Not all fish do this but some do.  Also, the posting on the anchor drop could be or cause a depression.   chuck

I'm also not sure what this thing is.

I think the only way to know is to dive it.

Good luck

Hi Harry,
When you dived it, did you look to see if there is any compass deviation, indicating the presence of buried metal?

Hi Kevin,
no I was circling around the anchor chain and wasn't using a compass to navigate. But it's good that you mentioned it: I'm gonna take my metal detector with me and check if there is something underneath the mud.

Thanks / Harry
