How to enable Recording and Snapshot View
« on: February 08, 2010, 09:39:49 PM »
First off I'd like to say this is fine site with plenty of helpful info. I don't know if I'm posting in the correct post but I have a question. Is it possible to record using a 987? All I seem to have is snapshot option. Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard, yes the 987 unit records, it has two slots for SD cards.  You must have a card in the slot to be able to record.

R91,

You will need to go to the Snapshot/Recording View and Press Menu > Start Recording.

If you cannot see the Snapshot Recording View, then you will need to enable the View through the menu.  Hit the Menu button twice, then goto Views > Snapshot Recording View, and then use the arrow button to select Visible.

Good Luck,

Robert

Have you set your system to the advanced mode?

I have quickly reviewed the manual for your unit and could not find anything in regards to "recording".

You will need to scroll thru the screens until you find the recording screen as Robert's picture demonstrates.

Robert it would be good for us if HB would add a drop down with recording on it to stop and start.  I try to stop and start in 30 minute intervals and have to scroll thru the screens each time.  The 3 preset buttons is no where near enough, when you are trying different screen views and it is a pain to get back to where you where when resetting the recordings.

The 987c/981c did not come with Recording capabilitites when they first came out, and therefore its not in the original manual.  You do not have to be in the Advanced User mode to Enable Views or see the Snapshot Record Screen.

George, Once you start recording you can hit Menu once in any screen and it will bring up the express menu and the Stop Recording drop down is there.  You just have to be in the Snapshot/Recording View to Start Recording again.  I agree, there should be a simple way to start recording from any screen!

I have my presets like this:
1) SI View
2) SI View/Chart View
3)Snapshot Record View

This way, I can get to the Record Screen quickly and back to SI View in two keystrokes.

Thanks Robert

Yes when recording the express menu gives the option to stop recording, then you have to go on the hunt for the recording screen to restart the recording mode.

I have my presets
1. SI View
2. SI/Chart View
3. DI/2D View

I need to rethink my presets.

This is a good topic for HB to look into.  After reading and playing with the unit I am not sure of any quick screens unless it is to add to one of your presets.  which takes away from the fishing screens normally used.  For our use we have a preset  for a shortcut but we can afford the loss of fishing  screens.  I would suppose to give us buttons it will take a retooloing of the unit and I doubt if HB will do that.  Maybe for a future as yet unannounced new HB they might be able to do something.  HB is a little like Garmin as they give you a lot of capability but it takes a bit of screen searching to find or make that which matches your needs to be available.   We do a lot of recording so that is why we have a preset.  but I do see the fishing needs also but just dont see any other shortcut.  Harry, can you weigh in on your presets since you do a lot of wreck searches.   Chuck

Sure Chuck,
I'd like to have a separat "Record" button as well.

I have my presets like this:
#1: SI Screen
#2: Snapshot /Recordings Screen
#3: "Mark" button.

If I record I hit the menu button in any screen to stop the recording and if I want to restart recording, I hit the #2 preset button and scroll to "start record" and start from there.

Having the "Record" button would make things much easier.

Regards / Harry

thanks Harry, a record button would have been a nice feature but I guess in the R&D of the business it did not make sense at the time.  Oh well, we can hope for a future product.  Although a thought could be to make existing button programmable for customized use.  Might be cheaper for HB to do this instead of retooling.  chuck

Remember, they didn't even have Recording in the begining!  Personally, I think the unit should continuously record to memory and then export the file like the Tracks.

Here is the latest exerpt on Snapshots and Recording from the Humminbird Manual.

I would like to record on the top in the express menu all of the time.  It is a pain to have to load the recording screen then load the express menu to record.

Yes I understand the earlier units but by the time 900 and 1100 series were in design,  record should have been a more easy selected option.   I like the idea of record on and write to file like tracks.  Wonder if that would eat the processor for lunch????  More and more are using recording so maybe HB will meet us with a customize feature for a button.  chuck

On the 997 with the Side/Sonar Combo view as one preset ... To get to the Snapshot and Recording View with a quick double tap ==> preset for the S/S C and then the View button ==> S & R View. For other double taps it's another strategically established preset and either the View or Exit button. Scroll through the View Menu to see the possibilities. Sometimes it might take hiding a view you don't often use to get you where you want to go quicker.

Robert thanks for the link to the 998 manual post.  Even though I have an 1197 it has new info that pertains to the 1197's updates.

Double tap the pre-set.   Will try this.  and you are right to hide screens not regularily used.  that is a great tip.  I had forgotten that in our setup we hid screens.  Chuck

Hi
What is it a double-tab should do, instead of just one short press on one of the presets ?

Not sure Martin.  I have to take the posting and try it.  I am reading into this that the preset can be used as a two function key,  one tap does the preset and a second quick tap goes to another page.  I dont know. I will play with the unit and see what the post was about.   chuck

There are only three presets. There is a good chance that all three are in use and the object in this case is to be able stop one recording and start another quickly without having to press the View button multiple times to get to the Recording View. From different display views, it takes a different number of times pressing the View button to get there. This approach is a preplanned sequence that will get me there in a set number of moves.

When I'm out trolling and searching for new structure, I use a separate GPS unit for navigation and run mostly with the 997 in the SI View. With the object being to stop one recording and start another quickly, I press the preset for the Side/Sonar Combo View followed by the View button in rapid succession and then the Menu button. At this point pressing the right Select button twice stops one recording and starts another. After the waypoint is created, pressing the Exit button twice returns me to the Side/Sonar Combo View where I can catch a quick glance at the SI on the Combo View before returning to the SI View. This only takes a few seconds including the pause for the waypoint to be created. Note: This is all dependent on the sequence that the Views are presented in the View menu.

A double tap is a shooting term for placing two shots on target rapidly without taking time to examine the results of the first shot. Sorry, I hope that fills in for the short hand in my reply above.

Sorry i am late. When restore defaults is used the top preset is SI, the middle is SI and 2d. Hit the middle preset, then view for the snapshot page then menu for recording page. This allows quick access to snapshots(middle preset then view) and you can then hit menu for recording,(to stop recording hit menu while unit is recording and select stop recording). Kinda easy and you don,t lose your default settings. Default keeps map and sonar on bottom preset allowing you to hit exit for full map. THESE OPERATIONS OCCUR ON 800, 900 AND 1100 SERIES UNITS.

Thanks Harry.  To make things easier for us HB sould sell two units for the price of one.  That way we can have boat mounted and then garage mounted.  or maybe we shoud build a heated garage for the boat.  Winter time is not the most confortable time to be playing with our units but it is  also the time when we have time to think about operation and the wish list..... so good things  come out of winter blahs.  thanks for the default explanation.  Chuck
