An Omaha fisherman using sonar Thursday helped authorities recover the body of a 23-year-old man who drowned in Beaver Lake.

The body of Ammon J. Witters of Papillion was recovered about 2:50 p.m. by a diver working with fisherman Terry Johnson of the Twin Rivers Bass Club. Witters had been missing since about 8 p.m. Monday when he fell out of a boat that was pulling a wakeboarder.

Gerry Witters, the victim's father, said his son's body was recovered about 150 feet from the south shore of the lake, near the spot where he was last seen. An autopsy will be conducted today in Douglas County, he said, and the body is expected to be released in the afternoon.

“We feel very relieved to come to some level of closure,” Gerry Witters said. “It doesn't solve the sorrow of him being gone from here on earth, but we have a firm belief that we will see him again.”

Services for Ammon Witters will be Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2210 Harlan Drive in Bellevue. The Witters family will meet with friends from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., with the service starting at 11 a.m.

Ammon Witters was the youngest of the family's six children. His brothers and sisters gathered from all over the United States this week as rescue workers continued to search for his body.

“The volunteers that looked for Ammon were so hard-working and so dedicated,” Gerry Witters said. “We truly want to thank them for all their work and the outpouring of support from the community.”

Johnson said he grew frustrated as the search stretched into days. He said he first offered to search the lake with his Humminbird Side Imaging Sonar system on Tuesday.

“They finally agreed to let me come down and try,” Johnson said. “I knew that I had technology that these guys hadn't seen, and I just wanted to find the kid for his family.”

Johnson compared the sonar system to a CAT scan. He said the device can take photographs of an area 300 feet wide.

Beaver Lake is a 325-acre private lake about 20 miles south of Omaha near U.S. Highway 75.

Witters was one of eight or nine friends on a 21-foot ski boat Monday evening. The boat was pulling a wakeboarder, who fell off the board. The boat driver then turned sharply to retrieve the wakeboarder, and Witters fell off the edge of the boat, said Capt. Dave Lamprecht of the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

The boat hit Witters and he sank. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The boat’s driver, Lonnie J. Hoschar, 32, of Plattsmouth, was not ticketed.

Rescue crews from Plattsmouth and Murray, Neb., worked with a team of scuba divers from Yutan, Neb., in the search for Witters’ body.

Ammon Witters’ other survivors include his mother, Rhoda Elaine Witters of Papillion; brothers Jared of Mattawa, Wash., Aaron of Phoenix and Joseph of Falls Church, Va.; and sisters Sarah Rahm of San Diego and Rebecca Gunn of Savannah, Ga.
