28 minute video on new 15" unit

Shame about the wind noise.  Actual on the water use.

Just watched the video again and something stood out as different.  The depth ranged from about 10 to 18 fow and the SI range is set at 100', but the display only shows images out to 25 to 40'
in the SI display.  The 2D and DI look good.  Although I am not familiar with Chirp, I would have guessed a wider coverage.  Any thoughts?

Higher frequency attenuates (absorbs in water) faster than lower frequency ...

Environmental conditions (especially bottom hardness/softness) also absorbs sound ...

These factors (among others) dramatically influence how much sound is reflected back to the xducer ... after all, what is displayed in the image is only the remainder of the attenuating sound pulse after all other influential factors have taken away from the sound pulse transmit strength ...

1200kHz is super high frequency and is destined (by influences noted) to have less range ...

I'm sure we will see better (and worse) range with Mega Imaging as the units get into users hands with their varied environmental differences ...

Thanks Rickie.   Just used to 455 and 800 filling more of the screen.

Understandable Mike ...

We tend to want the best of both "range and detail" in the same image ... but that's simply not how sound in water works ...

We already know 455kHz gives more range than 800kHz - but with less detail ...
(and 800kHz gives more detail with less range) ...

The same Sonar physics apply with 1200kHz vs 800kHz (or 455kHz) ...

Mega will be a tool for close range Mega detail - not Mega range ...

Here is a youtube video showing full screen mega imaging from HB.

Great marketing images ...

We will see when users start posting images ...

I agree.  Interesting that Gerald had those images on the screen with a HB design engineer sitting next to it, although he was facing the back of the unit.  Time will tell.

While reading the attached link, I may have found why the image in the first video looked the way it did.   Maybe Gerald had the unit set to DI instead of SI.

I would have expected HB to increase the power to maintain range for the Mega Imaging. I sounds like they decided not to do this. I think many people who buy a Mega unit will be a bit disappointed if they can only get 40' out to each side. I wouldn't be surprised if HB increases power in the future to increase range.

I have seen good quality images from the Mega units out to 100' using chirp at the high frequency with no apparent darkening on the sides.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

All things Sonar abide by Sonar rules of "give and take" in R & D development (and marketing) ...

Increasing the transmit power does indeed put more power into the water for more strength in the sound pulse ...which indeed would garner more range ...

But that same increased power also induces more "noise" in the return echo that must be dealt with (thru filtering) before displaying the data ...

There comes a "point of no advantage" in increased transmit power where the noise over-powers the good returns ...

Better filtering is possible - but at increased cost in more expensive sounder processors = which is also factored by "give and take" ... in the fact that there comes a "point of no advantage" in ...:

"Cost of manufacture" vs "What consumers are willing to pay for the product"...

Good points. I had known this form my military training, but had forgotten.   Wish they would think about this in the automobile industry. Paying for all this new technology is getting expensive.
