Can a 998 be used for ice fishing??
« on: July 19, 2014, 07:44:17 PM »
Hey all, new to the forum, and new to Humminbird electronics up until a couple weeks ago when I purchased a 998cx HD SI (I think thats right).   My question is whether I would be able to use this unit for ice fishing or not??  I don't really care if I have SI or DI capabilities, I would just like to be able to use the GPS to get to the spots I have marked from the summer, and then use 2D sonar while I'm fishing.  I'm thinking another GPS antenna would be needed unless I want to pull the one it came with off the boat for the winter, but what transducer would I need to get to make it work for me??  Thanks for any help recieved...   8)

Yes, you can use your 998 for ice fishing. I don't recall the lower end of the operation temperature range. I did find this though.

Hi,
I have used a 981 in -25 degrees Fahrenheit (-32 Celsius). The display didn't freeze, but cables got very stiff.

You can use the supplied transducer. You will need to devise a mount that will keep the bottom of the transducer parallel (left/right + front/back) to the bottom. I would choose Sonar or Sonar Zoom in the View Menu. In the Sonar Menu Tab, under Beam Select, you can choose 83 kHz or 200 kHz depending on the bottom coverage you want. I would consider buying a second GPS antenna depending on how involved removing the original would be.

Trav,

I used mine all last winter. I bought this transducer for it.

http://www.humminbird.com/Products/XI-9-20/

The thing is you need to set the the transducer to dual beam in the sonar menu. You also need to hit 'Normal' in the start menu and not wait for it to start on its own. (It doesn't have a thermometer in the 'ducer so the head unit needs to be forced to start)

The unit eats a LOT of battery. Again, the unit eats a LOT of battery. For a full day with the brightness up you'l want at least a 12 amp hour battery. I keep my brightness down to 3 and it helps. I'm also usually in a portable shanty all day so I don't have to fight glare. I've never had the unit freeze up, even when in the box of the truck for a couple of hours in sub 0*F weather.

I built a carrying case (out of cherry, it looks nice) and have the head unit, battery and GPS antenna mounted to it. I made sure I designed it so no matter at what angle, it won't fit down the hole. Holes in the ice are magnets for electronics.

I did use it couple of times with the regular SI 'ducer, but I didn't trust the longevity of the wire and fitting down the hole in thick ice was a pain. I'm much happier with the ice 'ducer.

Hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys.  Glad to know I can just use an ice transducer for it, that will make things alot simpler to deal with.   8)

When using the ice xducer (or any of the Dual Beam xducers)...be sure to set the "Transducer Select" menu to "Dual Beam"...

This should keep the SI transmitters in the HB SI unit from firing...
