Will flush mount effect GPS signal
« on: July 03, 2013, 05:13:48 AM »
Hello everyone, long time looker, first time poster, names Brad, I'm based in Adelaide, Australia, I'm a avid saltwater fisho with a splash of freshwater fishing, I'm looking at purchasing my first side scan 798c SI unit tomorrow and just want to know if Flush mounting the unit will interfere with GPS signal at all?  Any input would be appreciated. Cheers AUSbigfish

Cheers Brad and welcome to the Side Imaging Forums.

Is this a 798c Si or a 798ci Si model unit?  The difference being that the first has an external GPS Receiver and the latter has an internal GPS Receiver.  If the internal GPS model is mounted in an area that has some sort of material that prevents the signal from the GPS satellites from getting to it, than yes it will affect the units GPS capabilities.  There is no way of know whether yours will or won’t without knowing what materials will be above and around the unit.  Usually we are talking metallic substances here (possibly even the metal flake in the boat’s gel coat).  Fiberglass is not a problem.  If you do have this issue you could always install an external GPS Receiver.  This is usually the best installation for more accurate waypoint markings anyways as you can install the GPS Receiver closer to the transducer that the unit uses.
