shortening transducer and gps puck wires.
« on: August 04, 2013, 11:13:45 PM »
has anyone tried shortening the wires for gps puck and transducer?
i just shortened the wire on a terrova foot control, it was just 4 wires in there and just soldered the shorter pieces back together. works perfect. but wondering if ill get interference with something like gps and sonar?
is it possible to get the plugs form humminbird to just put on at end of cut wire?

I don't think that Humminbird sells the plugs separately.
Also, some of those cables have internal shielding, which you
may damage if you take them apart.

Right ITG
The cable plugs are not available from us as we get them molded onto the cables when we purchase them.
You can possibly create an interference entry point if you cut and resolder the cables.  There is shielding within the cables that has to be reattached and maintained or you may get interference.

There are a number of connector manufactures that have plugs just for what you want to do. I would suggest a technician to make the cut and rewire. We have done this on a lot of our units so the cable is custom fit. It is not hard to do. Nor is it expensive..

NY, try cable connectors, refine with electronics, possibly water proof cable connectors.  It may take a bit of creativity but even connector manufactures might do.  We have a electronic plant here and I go thru them.  I have in the past searched and with some different tries have gotten "hits". Once you get in the ball park the search suggestion are a great help also... the world if full of "connectors" and especially in the low voltsge/amp electronic use. And they recognize the need for waterproof also..
