GPS Problem
« on: October 06, 2012, 04:07:29 PM »
My 788 CI HD is not staying locked on to the satellites. It will find a set and then start over and over. The GPS speed and heading indicator keep jumping around. This started with a firmware upgrade to V6.420. Can I re install the earlier firmware??

Thanks I already downloaded it. I just wanted to know if you could update the firm ware to an earlier version without messing the 788 up. I have a 798 SI and a 737 and both of the GPS sections are rock steady and the 788 was until I upgraded the firmware on the 788. Humminbird told me in an e mail that that was normal (I don't think so). All three units used to lock on and give GPS data. The 788 keeps refreshing its satellite acquisitions in the GPS diagnostic view where the 798 keeps its set of satellites and gives steady GPS readings.

Yes you can install any of the older version that you want.  But you cannot keep multiple versions on the same SD card, I believe the unit(s) choose the latest version.  Even though this site keeps an archive of revisions, I generally keep a copy of all versions on my computer.

Also, if for some reason the revision does not load properly and causes some frustration, it is best to reload an older version then reload the revision you want.  There has been at least one time that I had to re-download a revision.  The internet or a computers can be fickle causing an issue with a download, so before you decide a revision is not any good, reload it and try again.  I have used every revision and have and to reload revisions a few times and to date have not found a bad one.

Does anyone have the firmware for the 788 CI HD that was just before V6.420.? The V5.40 isn't the one I need to go back to before the problem started with the v6.420 UPDATE. Help Humminbird Gregg!!!!  I need the old version or the firmware I had before the update.

Yes I do Mike. That would be software version 6.250 and if I did it right; you should have an e-mail from TransferBigFiles.com that will send you to that software.

I would like to add something to what George posted about loading “any of the older versions that you want”.  Some changes made to the software could be to accommodate differences in electronic components that we sometimes have to change to.  If you were to load a software version that is older than what your unit was originally produced with; you could load a version of software that is incompatible with the electronic components that your unit has.  This would require the unit to be sent back to Humminbird.  So please do not load a version of software that is older than what your unit was originally built with.
