Title: Helix 5 si gps no maps
Post by: Greasypapa on August 12, 2015, 12:58:36 AM
I just bought a helix 5 si with GPS and have used it only twice but there seems to be no maps at all when using the gps.  I live up in Canada and didn't expect much but thought it would have something like google maps, all I get is a tan screen and my tracking lines.  Am I doing something wrong, or do I have to buy navionics or is ther some free maps that I could use for shore lines.

you need AutoChart if  you want all Canadians lake maps without depth.

I live in quebec and only the US who has unimap, if you go to DEMO mode on your unit and move you cursor to near by New York city, or other places you will start to see lakes, highways..etc...

UniMap is basically lake outlines ...

HB units can use LakeMaster and Navionics ...or you can build your own maps with AutoChart like Beau mentions ...

Unimap is a very rudimentary map.  If you go with Navionics Plus you MUST use the download product that stays under the 2GB download limit.  You CANNOT use the 6GB preloaded product for USA and Canada.  That means you have no choice but to use the "World Regions" download product if you pick Nav Plus.

I use that with my Helix 5.  It works very well.  Note that the Helix 5 can display both the nautical charts as well as the Sonar charts.

By the way, the 2GB limit is not much of a problem.  I have all of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, and southern BC on mine in just 1.5GB of space.  The map loading software does a great job of showing you how much memory your selection takes up.

See the compatibility chart on the Navionics website for details.

Thanks. That's what I'll have to get then. Looks like the best option!
