899 freezes up intermittently
« on: December 01, 2014, 09:50:08 AM »
This is a new unit and has had this problem from the very beginning.

Unit boots up and works as it should. At some point in time, a few seconds to several minutes, it freezes up. Nothing works, the display is not updating, no buttons will work, you can not shut it down with the button. The only way to shut down is to pull the power plug.

To make this more interesting, at times with no hands on the unit, it will shut down and stay off, or sometimes it will then reboot by itself.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Bruce.

I agree with kosmo as we have seen this be a power supply problem in other boats.  Check all of your power connections for any that are loose or corroded.  Be sure and check the use holder, fuse and battery contacts.  If you did not run new power wires straight from the battery, try connecting the unit straight to the battery (through a 3 Amp fuse) to see if this is the problem or run new wires for it.  Be sure to use a large enough gauge for this.

You could also try cross-testing with someone else that has an 800 or 900 series Humminbird unit to see where the problem is.

Greg:

I took the display unit back to the retailer and ran it on his demo rack and it seemed to work just fine. I then checked his demo voltage and found it to be 14.6vdc. (Hmm) - - I thought "could it be that there is a component in the unit that isn't up to spec.?" The retailer offered to exchange the unit and have me try a different one on my boat. I plugged it in with the original power cord that I had left connected to the boat power, and  so far - - - no problems. My power at this time is 13.1vdc and I am going to let it run a few hours tonight and if no problems show up; step 2 will be to put it on a battery that is 11.3vdc and see if any failure occurs. A voltage of 11.6vdc is as low as I have ever reached during normal operation. If everything still functions properly, the problem may be solved.

I'll report back after extended use next weekend.

I appreciate your prompt suggestions, and they may still come into play if this effort fails.

Bruce
