The last "stable" version of software - for any HB unit
« on: April 12, 2013, 01:00:48 PM »
Rickie encourage me to post this topic:

Quote
It is always a good idea to have the last "stable" version of software on a separate SD card in case things go awry with unit operation...(the last "stable" version for your particular unit might be a good topic for you to ask in the forum)...

Which one do you have on your unit? Please share with us: purchase date, particular unit and the last "stable" version of the firmware for your unit. THANK YOU SO MUCH and God bless you

I still keep 6.310 for my 2010 model 1197c SI Combo...(with my unit at all times)....

And I still pop it in sometimes for comparison or to undo any uh-ohs in the newer 6.600 or 6.610....

I'm running SW Ver. 6.300 on both a  798ci SI and 997c SI, along with 4.3.3 for HB-PC on the 'puter. It works well having the new GPS management on both units and the PC.  When I do update, I carry the old version for both units out with me for the first few trips, along with backup GPS data. Each on  separate SD cards - and I did reload the older versions out on the water once.

Then again, I haven't been out much in the last few months.

Tight lines,
Darrell

Rickie and Darrell,

Which version should I install on my 898c SI Combo? When I got this brand new unit in 2010, I just registered the unit on Humminbird site and downloaded v.5.7 to SD card at that time. I never installed on my unit. Since I got a boat just recently, I went again to Humminbird site and downloaded  just yesterday v.6.610 to another SD card. I haven't installed it either to my unit.

Which version should I put for the first time in my unit? Doesn't matter which one for the first time?
Should be the last latest version before just resent one v.6.610? Is it a v.6.300? If that the case with your unit Rickie, should I do the same? Where I can download it from?

Can anyone help me?  God bless you

I just read a discussion on the General topics re: new v.6.610

If I have also I pilot link, and this v.6.610 includes:

Quote
Added 360 Imaging operation menus and capabilities • Added iPilotLINK operation menus and capabilities

should I not install this v.6.610 on my HB unit? and have a one of the previous ones? Which one? v.6.300 or v5.7?

Thanks again and God bless you

Go into the "System Status" of your unit and note what software version the unit currently has...

Go here and download that original version to a formatted SD card...
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?action=downloads;cat=20

Now, if you have iPilot Link I think you will need 6.600 or 6.610....(6.610 has fixes for bugs found in 6.600)...

Go to your HB account and download 6.610 to a separate formatted SD card....

Follow Robert's update procedure here to install 6.610..
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=14.0
(Restore Factory Defaults after Roberts instructions also)

If you find issues or anomalies in 6.610 follow the same instructions from Robert with the SD card that contains the version of software you first found in your unit...

Rickie,

I finished finding the factory software version for my 2010 unit which is v.4.970. I downloaded to the separate SD card.
I follow yours and Greg's instructions and restored factory defaults. At the end I placed the SD card with v.6.610 and followed Greg instructions. It is done. Thank you so much.

How that practically works? When we keep previous versions with us, why we do that? Do we also keep other versions with us?

The factory version for my unit is v.4970. At that time after the purchase and passing this unit to me as a gift, I downloaded latter v.5.700 from Humminbird website at the time of registration.

Can you switch back and forth any software version while on the lake? Or do we use always the newest one and keep the factory one just in case of trouble? What is the purpose of keeping previous versions and when do we use it? If we can, do we have to restore defaults again and again... Thank you and God bless you.

I would not perform an update while out on the lake, just in case something happens or goes wrong.  I always try to do my updates at home when I can take my time and do it right.  Also if anything happens, I have not killed my fishing or diving trip!

MarioFisherman,

I'm sorry, thought this was a more general question along the lines of a poll of who has what version working on which units.

  • Can you switch back and forth any software version while on the lake?
  • Or do we use always the newest one and keep the factory one just in case of trouble?
  • What is the purpose of keeping previous versions and when do we use it?
  • If we can, do we have to restore defaults again and again... Thank you and God bless you.

  • See Robert's answer above.
  • If the new release adds functions that you want to use, then maybe yes. If not, then maybe no. (See #3 below).
  • Sometimes adding new functionality to the software causes unexpected problems with other features of the unit. If this happens it might be necessary to go back to the last version you had that functioned properly. That would be why you would want to keep a previous copy of the unit's software ("firmware").
  • Whenever you load the unit's software you want to follow the installation procedures that they refer you to. There have been cases where when the software fails to install correctly, the unit has to be sent in to Humminbird to get it working again.

Tight lines,
Darrell

Darrell and Greg,

Thank you for your answers. I want to learn a proper way of using and maintaining my HB unit. At the same time someone else could benefit from your help.

Greg posted on one of the posts, that for 898c SI combo a "stable" version - most would agree - will be v.6.490.

Thank you and God bless you
