Dual Transducer set-up
« on: November 23, 2011, 08:36:14 PM »
I have a 998 with the side image transducer and the Shoot thru Transducer. I have the Y-cable connected to both and then to the finder.

I switch in the menu to the Dual Beam and it works, but then when I want to go to the Hi-Def scan like I had before it reads with clutter and it reads depths of 300+ ft when I am in 10-20 ft.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check to see that you have the correct transducers connected to the correct connectors on the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.  They can be plugged into the wrong connectors (I know from experience!) and it could cause this.

If that is correct; try plugging the HDSi transducer directly into your 998 unit to make sure that it is working.  If it is, then it sounds like a bad AS-Si-DB-Y cable and you should call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks to get a replacement.

Thanks Greg.

Does the high speed tranducer auto switch over? or do you have to manually switch it.

I assume the Side scan should be set on High-def scan and the high speed shoot thru is set on Dual?

I guess I want to know if I have to manually switch it all the time.

Are you asking for a switch like the T3 or asking if the transducer switches for the view selected?

If you are using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable than there is not switching involved.  This cable combines the Si sonar and Water Temp of the Si transducer with the 2D DualBeam sonar of the inside-the-hull transducer; so the unit 'sees' just the one transducer.  The 2D sonar will always be coming from the DualBeam transducer.  There is no menu settings needed - just leave your unit set to the High-Def Si menu setting.

Chuck,
I was confused as to if I had to manually change the transducer from SI/DI to the dual beam shoot thru. Greg says both are working the same time. 2D sonar is always on the shoot thru and the Imaging is using the other one.

Is that right Greg?

Anyway, I need to figure out why my depth is messed up on the reugular 2D. Could it be that I installed the Transducer incorrectly? I wouldn't think I would get crazy 300 foot depths even if it isn't seated correctly.

I installed it as far back as possible with boat still there.

How is the shoot-thru attached? Are there any air bubbles with the installation? Is it installed on a flat surface in relation to the water? And, is the boat fiberglass or aluminum?

It's fiberglass and as flat as I could make it.

Even if it was tilted slightly, would I get 300+ feet of off-set?

Greg may be right as far as the cable being faulty.

I think there are issues with the sensitivity of the transducer. You can search this forum using the search tab at the top and find a lot of information on this issue. From installation to interference. Unit settings will affect the readings...
Do a search... ;D

Califormniatexan,
Please confirm that the correct transducers are plugged into the AS-Si-DB-Y cable (and that you are using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable).

Also try plugging each transducer into the 998 unit by itself – without the Y-cable and see which reads to bottom correctly.  This with the unit’s Transducer Select menu set to the High-Def Side Scan setting.  Also make sure that there are no other sonar units on at the same time, so we are not dealing with sonar-to-sonar interference.

You are correct Ct; with the AS-Si-DB-Y cable both transducers are working at the same time (but the 2D sonar in the Side Imaging transducer is not working).

Incorrect installation of an inside-the-hull transducer can cause incorrect water depth readings.  A slight tilt would not produce the readings you stated but air under the transducer or installing the transducer in a bad location to begin with would.  Did you test the installation location prior to mixing up the epoxy?  Did you prep the hull before epoxying in the transducer?
