I think you would get a LOT more out of the unit if you systematically go thru the manual and adjust the settings just to see what they all do ..... some time on the water just learning the unit will pay off big later on.

It is normal to need to adjust settings with changes in depth, bottom composition, etc.....If something gets messed up you can always reset to default settings.....also make sure the unit is advanced mode to get the most from it and have all the views available ..... hide the view you don't want to see.
