external gps

does the battery power need to be at a certain amount to run the unit and gps. My unit has never had problems. I put it on yesterday and said connected but no gps fix. have one on the other boat as well same issue. any help

Yes it does.  What we have been seeing some Humminbird users post about are problems with their GPS that go away when better power is provided to their unit.  Better power may mean running a new set of 16 to 14 AWG multi-stranded copper wires and adding a new blade type fuse holder and new 3 amp fuse.  Solder and seal all connections.  It could also mean replacing an aging battery.

Try testing your units on another boat and theor unit on your boats to cross check where the problem is.
