This is right up Rickard's and Xsilmarilsx's alley.

Hi,
I have only used SI for forward looking by first moving perpendicular to the planned direction and then entering the scanned area when it looks clear from obstacles. In this way I have sometimes checked the area close the shore before going close. But this is not a very safe method since SI doesn't really tell depth. One must learn how to detect obstacles from shadows in the image and make judgments.

The boating season is over here so I have to wait with testing another idea, tilting the transducer so the SI beams are sent forward and hit the seafloor at some distance in front of the boat. I can forsee some drawbacks with this like unstable depth reading and the lookahead will be shorter the more critical the situation is.

There is one system that seems to do this very well with SI, DrDepth's Xtools toolkit: http://www.drdepth.se/xtools.php?l=gb You need a computer and a rotating device that you build yourself, plus a HB SI unit (with ethernet port, I suppose). The result seems excellent and a correct forward view is displayed in real time on the computer. I don't think the HB 360 system can do this.
