Confused about Down Imaging
« on: November 21, 2010, 11:41:49 AM »
I was browsing through all the cool images on this site. I have a Humminbird 998. I have attached an Image from the Down Imaging gallery and am confused about the down imgage. It merely looks the same side image that is just rotated. In this image, the down image looks the same as the side image to the left of the boat

So what is confusing about seeing what is directly under the boat in both views? On the Side Imaing view the object is shown in the water column from the surface to the bottom and not off to the side. The Down Imaging is showing what is in the water column under the boat.
If you would have had the SI view set to left and right, the object probably would have been shown in all three views.

If the structure is standing upright in the water column, why is there no shadow on the side image? That's what i find confusing. For example, I have attached an image from the Humminbird site

There is a shadow of the bush/tree shown on the left side of both Side Imaging views.
You need to remember that the width of the DI coverage is adjustable--Narrow/Medium/Wide
Also in the Humminbird website image, the tree/bush is not directly under the boat, but on the left side. The shadow is created because the SI beam is blocked by the limbs and that creates the shadow.
You first screen shot looks like the subject was directly under the boat and no shadow can be created since the sonar beam was not blocked from the side.

Here is a SI shadow in shallower water than the illustrations with the primary subject on the left.
