Humviewer card use?
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:59:29 AM »
Hi guys,

Couple quick questions, so Humveiwer is completely free? No catches?

Also if I record my sounder for eight hours of trolling, how much space on my card will that use? Or if you know how much it uses per hour that would be good to know.

Thanks heaps.

Humviewer is completely free...no catches....

You might want to reduce that receding length idea to multiple 15-20 minute recordings.....

That's a LOT of data to load into Humviewer and a 1 hour recording could take up to 5-15 minutes to load that recording data before you could even start viewing the recording in Humviewer...

You can also reduce the amount of sonar data being recording and get more recordings on a SD card by turning off the 83kHz sonar frequency....you'll miss recording a few fish returns in the wider 60° 2d sonar beam but they will still show up in the SI and DI....

Hi nicko_cairns, my 798 unit tells me there is about 8 hours of recording time using a sandisk 2 GB card, cut recordings down to 30 minutes maximum so they load up faster on hummviewer, there are no catches whatsoever with hummviewer but when you want to step up, try sonartrx, the slant range corrected image tiles open up in google earth and have found waypoint marking to be more accurate than hummviewer, reefmaster is also great for creating detailed contour and 3D maps of your local fishing areas.

Ok so choosing that beam only won't affect the SI at all? Sweet thanks. What about Yellowfin program? What is it etc?

Thanks mate,

Yeah sonartrx looks great, have checked it out on Youtube but $170 is a lot to fork out! Thinking about it, what's yellowin? Is Humviewer the best free program? Thanks.

Lastly, when I upload my waypoints into HumminbirdPC should it take 10-15mins just for that? I've got a lot of waypoints but is this slow?

Cheers

nicko_cairns, start with hummviewer to get a feel for how these programs work. Mapping is the next frontier, it enables you to find new fishing spots quickly, even in areas you have fished for many years, it will save you time and fuel. The 798 was the best thing i purchased for the boat, the next best thing was mapping software, together they will give you insights into your fishing areas that otherwise would not have been possible.  ReefMaster and SonarTrx have free trial versions.

Correct ...turning off the 83kHz 2d beam only shuts off that 2d frequency ...(meaning less data to have to record)....

The SI data is coming from a completely different set of crystals in the SI Xducer...

Thanks will do, at the moment I'm recording my track files and just searching new ground, taking different paths to get there. Looking forward to using hummviewer.. what's yellowfin though? I'll have to do some googling..

So just so I'm 100%, the SI will still pick up any structure that the 83kHz would have picked up as the SI covers that part of the bottom anyway, right? Cool I'll give 200kHz it a go as that's my two settings from memory, 83/200 or both.. thanks guys.

nicko_cairns, a couple of hummviewer shots, the 200KHZ does show the fish arches better than the 83 KHZ, so the advice given above is quite good.

Thanks Mako,

That looks like downscan though right? So I should avoid the normal sounder view and use downscan instead? Cheers.

nicko_cairns, they are both 'normal sounder views', you can choose 83KHZ, 200KHZ, or 83/200KHZ, on your 798 unit, choose the 200KHZ option, that is what has been suggested above, downscan and sidescan will still be recorded. Here is the downscan and sidescan images to match the ones above. This recording is over 30 minutes long and takes less than a minute to load up in hummviewer, even though the selection was 83/200KHZ.

Ok it just looked very different being all green so assumed it was downscan. Yeah I know how to change it thanks, I'll give it a go when this cyclone and the wind bugger off!

Looking forward to using Humviewer a lot.

mako101,
Sure you did not get these two hummviewer shots backwards?
I have never used hummiviewer but typically the wider the sonar beam, the more pronounced the arches from fish and the wider and less detailed the structure will be.

Greg, just double checked and you are correct. Probably best leave the 83KHZ beam switched on, it does produce better arches, and covers more area when looking for fish, well done Greg.

Thanks mako101.
I think that the point was to turn the 83kHz sonar off because that area was already being covered by the Si sonar plus it causes slower recording and larger file sizes when it is on.

True...this is the very reason for suggesting to turn off the 83kHz during recording...

Simply to reduce the amount of data being recorded....

If one wants to see the 83kHz 2d returns in their HB recording or their Humviewer playback, they would leave this 83kHz 2d setting "On"...

Ok I was confused, then unconfused followed by confused and now I'm unconfused again! I've got a big card with plenty of storage space so I'll trial the first recording with both kHz settings, if this takes forever to upload etc then I'll switch it to 200kHz only to reduce the amount of recording space. Thanks all.
