Helix 10 DI 2D Sonar Fishing Versus Driving
« on: May 13, 2016, 11:25:25 AM »
I need to put this out there because it is driving me crazy. I am fishing using controlled drift and my partner is watching the Helix 10 DI at the helm. There were very few fish showing up on 2D sonar while drifting. As soon as I fire up the big motor (even just idling) I start marking fish on the bottom. My partner says that she has experienced the same situation on her 1198. This makes no sense to me because if it was a settings issue then big motor running should not make any difference.

Anyone else experience the same situation??

Imaging screens look a LOT different depending on how fast you are moving and with DI, the direction you are traveling could make a lot of difference also due to fact that the beam is very narrow front to back and very wide side to side.

Were you watching the DI screen or 2D screen...or both.

At slow speeds with 2D, fish will often appear as streaks becasue they stay in the cone longer than when traveling faster.

Just looking at 2D sonar. I don't even have to move just start the motor and then the graph paints well defined arches.  I am in current  so really I am always moving.

Makes no sense unless you have an issue with low voltage when the motor isn't running.

No voltage issue......direct wired to new 1000 CCA battery.

I just get different sonar returns with the engine running. And as I said my partner is experiencing the same when she is using her 1198 on her Ranger.

This just isn't a problem I have heard reported before .....Not sure what could be your issue.

Is it possible to post some screen shots or a video?

Just because you have a new battery does not actually mean it is any good.
It may have sat uncharged on a shelf for many months.
Have the battery load tested.
If the battery is bad, then the altenator in the big motor could boost the voltage enough to allow your unit to function properly.

I guess there is also a very small chance that interference could be showing up as fish images, when the big motor is running.

Also, make sure you are not in simulator mode.

Please post some screenshots! If the motor is abruptly switched off, do the arcs suddenly seize? Or do they slowly become fewer?
