does gps receiver need rubber gasket for installation
« on: May 04, 2013, 07:50:17 AM »
Hey fellas.......please help. I got the nerve to drill a 5/16 hole on my glass boat at the train some above the transducer to install my GPS receiver (puck). The wire will run directly below the receiver, but there is no gasket between the glass and the receiver to prevent water from getting in (through the side wire notches and into the 5/16 hole I drilled.
What to do? Am I missing something or can I buy a gasket to fit my purpose? Has anyone made one?
Any advice would be much appreciated

Are you saying that you have drilled a hole for your GPS received on the vertical part of your transom?? And under the waterline? I might have got the wrong end of the stick, but if you have done that then you need to rethink where you are going to put it - it needs to be out of the water and flat, which is why it does not come with a gasket for sealing I guess. I have mine on the top of my console, but I'm sure others will chime in with location ideas.

Matt

No i did not install below water line  ;D

It is on top of my boat at the transom above the transduce, a very common placement. i was just wondering if they don't need a gasket and over time the waves coming over will get into the pilot hole?

;D I thought I must have got that wrong. I think I just gave mine a good dollop of silicon - although where I mounted it I didn't have too much concern about water ingress. Thinking back tho, there might have been a rubber gasket that did fit underneath it - I'm sure someone will chime in!
cheers,

There is no rubber gasket that ships with the GPS Receivers for this.  If you are concerned about water getting in this way than you may want to make your own gasket or use some sort of sealant on the cable cutouts and around the base to seal it.
