Navionics Hot Maps Premium or Platinum?
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:56:40 PM »
Before ordering, I decided on the Premium maps without the 3D imaging and satellite imagery.  When I placed the order, I opted for the Platinum.  It stands to reason that the additional imagery from the Platinum could slow the system down.  How significant does the Platinum maps slow down the unit and where is it most noticeable?  I now have both a Premium and Platinum map (unopened) and trying to decide which to return.

Which unit do you have?  The new units 898,998,1197 have a graphics co-processor and the slow down is minimal.  The other units will notice a difference, ut its not unbearable or drastic.

I picked up the 998cSI.  I guess the main question is whether the 3d rendering is useful or not.  A number of our lakes have rock ledges where you can go from 3 feet to 20 feet deep over a 10 to 20 foot movement.  It would be nice to have a different view for fishing tricky waters.

I don't have the Platinum card, but from what I have heard, they are cool to see, but you end up not using them too often for fishing.  Greg had commented on this in another thread.

But, you have it if you need it!

Does anyone know for sure if the processing speed increases with the 2d mode with the Platinum card, or is this card slower in all respects when compared to the Premium card.  Maybe I am just being a bit paranoid here, but I've worked with my fair share of computers bogging down with high resolution graphics.  Where I am concerned is when satellite imagery is displayed and when cruising down the lake that the display will be jerky and behind.  I have a similar concern when using 3d mode and having the unit bog down writing screen updates.  I just haven't seen a good live demonstration or youtube videos showing the high resolution mapping at speed.

I have decided to return the Platinum card and keep the Premium.  I am sure the Platinum card's features are great to play with, and the co-processor should do a better job of rendering the advanced images, but in the long run it might be best to keep things simple.  Plus most of the lakes I fish are not available with high definition mapping and the side scan will fill the information void.
