Questions before purchasing 1198si
« on: March 12, 2012, 05:37:11 PM »
Hello all I'm about to purchase the 1198si for my 30' Trojan Cruiser which has twin screw props.  With my research I've concluded that a hull mount of the transducer will not be a wise position for install and a dual thru the hull install will work best for optimal performance.  She is not a fast boat (30mph max) which I rarely push past 10 mph.  I'm more going to be using the 1198 for its sonar scanning abilities for finding wrecks and interesting dive spots.  Do you experts agree that a hull mount will be a bad idea (pictures included).

Now if I have to go with dual thru the hull transducers which cables/transducers will I need for optimal performance for what I will be using it for?

Lastly I'll be purchasing the unit through an American company.  Will this effect the maps that I get living in Canada or not.  I'm mostly on Lake Ontario near Kingston/Belleville area.

Hope these questions make sense as I'm very new to boating (less than 1 year) experience and have never purchased a fish finder before.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Jeff

Jeff, For my money a transom mount looks good right at the bottom of the 'V'.

Make a call to Hummingbird support to find out witch unit you need U.S. or Int' model.

Looks like a EZ install. Keep us posted and good luck.  Roddy

Hi Roddy thanks for taking the time.  So you don't think the prop wash will be of any hindrance for the sonar capabilities at slow speeds?  That definitely would make for the easiest install.

Jeff, One of my friends has a inboard twin prop. We did an transom mount at the bottom of the "V" and everything worked out fine. As normal with a SI/DI unit bottom contact loss above 5kts and slow turns which is about par for a SI/DI unit.

Some people install a second in hull/through hull transducer for water depth at speed for the SI/DI tends to go out the window at speed.

Good luck and enjoy!!  Roddy

I pulled the trigger today and ordered my unit.  The wife is getting new floors and furniture and I'm getting the 1198c si...only fair  ;D

I'm thinking of trying the transom mount but would like to hear from anybody else that has twin inboards and how it has worked out for them.

you might want to look into getting the transducer extension cord if you putting it on the transom of a 30 footer.  Just installed ours yesterday on our baha cruisers 299 and the cord was about 8 feet short. Had to order the 10 foot extension from hummingird.

That's too funny Rough House, I literally just got a call a half hour ago from my installer telling me I need the extension.  Found a decently priced one on e-bay with very reasonable shipping to Canada. Much better price than buying from the one store in Canada that carries it for 35.00+tax+shipping.   Here's the link in case anyone else runs into this...
