Side and down image not working
« on: July 25, 2012, 09:09:48 PM »
I have a 798 SI that is about 3 yrs old. I don't have any side image on the right and the left doesn't look good, no down image. :'( The image in simulator mode looks fine. Anybody have any ideas?
Called HB customer service, she pretty much told me there wasn't much I could do to tell wether it was bad unit or xducer except try it on another boat with same ducer or send it in. $200 if bad unit, $65 if nothing wrong or buy new ducer with no return if package is broken.
I took some pics but they didn't turn out. Didn't think about making a recording. Still looking for some one with a 798 in area.

HunninBird Greg chime in if you will (or anyone else).

Im no expert but my guess would be your transducer went bad. Greg would know better than me though.  Does your 2d still work correctly?

Did you do any work on your boat, or apply any new updates
since it worked correctly last time?

Have you double checked the sonar cable connections on the cable
and the back of your unit.

Is your battery and electrical connections in good shape?

2D ok

I remove my units when not fishing, and tried removeing and remounting several times I don't know how long this has been going on. Don't use side image all the time,
(maybe why live well been empty ha ha). Mostly use 2D and GPS while white bass fishing this time of yr.
Don't think that I have done any updates since it was working.

Also I have a 788c on front that I could interchange if I knew what to look for... know they have different ducers.
Thanks

Ricky,
I replied to you on Crappie.com (I think that was the forum), but your post here had a little more information: try setting the Transducer Select menu on your 788c unit to the QuadBeam setting and test it on your 798’s mount/transducer and see if you get any sort of reading in the right Side Beam.  You will have to set the View on your 788c to the Side Beam View to see this.  This will show if the transducer is working right or not.  If it is not, than call the Customer Resource folks back and ask them how much to ‘repair’ (will actually get replaced) the transducer.  This may save you some $$$.

Does this show up after you change the setting to QuadBeam?

Greg now both sides are not working. I will try to post a pic. I tried swaping the 788 in place of the 798 si on the console and changed the settings like you said (I think). I didn't see anything on the screen. I was confused about the "Side Beam View" but maybe I got it right.
Someone on this forum had a spare transducer and loaned it to me to try ( XHS-9-HDSI-180-T). looks like the ducer on my boat isn't working right. I was able to get the SI images with the spare transducer on a stick.

Ricky, glad you had a friend with a spare.
Check the connector in the transducer cable. (bent, broken, corroded)
Sometimes the transducers do go bad. (internal)

Ricky

Have you checked all of you pins to make sure one of them is not bent or broken?

They looked good to me ...rnvinc looked at them also (much younger eyes) ...he didn't see anything wrong.
Last time I was on the water I thought I would make a recording....I was surprised when I got home and saw something on the left side on Humviewer and nothing on the unit. Looks like a lot of noise.

sure looks like a bad transducer or cable.
SI on the left and nothing on the right..

Can you do any swaps of transducer or unit with someone else..

We did this chuck...

My spare HDSI xducer worked fine on his unit..(in 455kHz of course)...

Ricky is in process with HB about the best replacement scenario for him...

I instaled new transducer and tried it out today. Image looks great (can't remember it looking this good. I really believe it has been going bad slowly for a while. The image looks bright with less sensativity and down image even looks good.
Thanks again all (esp Rickie)
