798 and 898 saved SI scans, same resolution?
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:03:08 AM »
I've been asked to start a new thread, so here goes:

I understand the differences between the two models' screen resolutions and color depths, but the saved / exported SI scans are the same resolution, right?  So if I my main interest is to survey an area and mosaic the resulting scans, both models will generate the same quality / resolution SI scan, right?

So then the main difference between the two models (for my purposes) would be that the 898 offers a second transducer frequency and isn't available with an internal GPS, correct?

Thanks!  :)

That's a good question, one might think that the data recored would be the raw data and not compressed or manipulated based on the individul units display.  That extra step would eat up processor time, most cases raw data eats up more memory.  To answere your question, if the data is pure raw data then yes.  Maybe HGreg will chime in on this one.

bjgkahuna,

All the SI units store the recorded data in exactly the same way.  The transducers would be the only difference that may account for any variations usually, and this would be very very minimal if any!

In my experience, playing it back on the pc, it is pretty much impossible to tell the difference between a recording with a 797, 798, 898, 997, 998, or 1197!

Perfect!  That's exactly what I wanted to know.  Since I'll only be using the 798's screen as a "preview" and the saved data for later playback the 798 should be good enough.

BigK, for units that support video out, you can attach the output to a laptop and get a larger screen for real time viewing.. Of course you might want a nice boat cabin or bridge to put the laptop in.  although a toughbook might be the term for the type of computer attached.  The 798 does not have the video output.  Chuck
