798 screen clutter
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:56:02 PM »
I'm having trouble with my 798, the screen is solid clutter when moving at slow speeds. When I stop completely it improves but there is still a lot of clutter on the screen. In 17 feet of water the top 5 feet or so is solid clutter. I tried adjusting all the settings to get it to improve but nothing seemed to work. I have a 788 on the bow that was reading perfectly with no clutter at all, so it wasn't water conditions. Please help! thanks

Your transducer is probably mounted in a location where it's getting
a lot of water turbulence.  Transducers don't like air bubbles.
You can try lowering it a little.  If you have an aluminum boat, you don't
want it directly behind a rivit, or anything on the hull that will churn up
the water.  Also, you don't want the transducer too close to your prop.
Also, you can increase your noise filter setting.
I'd move the transducer first and see if that helps.

Interesting.  I have had the same problem with my 1198 at trolling speeds below 1 mph.   I have been setting the speed on the 1198 to 2 or 3 mph and it goes away.  It doesn't happen all of the time so I will have to check it out a little further.   Thanks for the input.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums t.anderson13.

If you are still seeing a lot of clutter on your 798 unit with the boat stopped it can mean that there is something wrong with either your unit or the transducer – assuming here that you did not also have the 788 on the bow on at the same time.  Did you?

1.)  Try powering off the 788 unit and test your 798 unit again.
2.)  If that does not help try testing your 798 unit on the 788 unit’s transducer and the 788 on the 798’s transducer and see what you get.  You may want to rest both units back to the factory default menu settings when doing this or at least duplicate the same menu setting in each unit.
3.)  Report back to us on how the above testing goes.

I did have both units on at the same time, I'll try what you are suggesting, I won't be able to do it until this weekend but I'll let you know what happened. Thanks

That looks like a possibility of maybe too high a sensitivity setting on the chosen Switchfire setting..

I always adjust Sensitivity dependent on which Switchfire setting I'm using...

Switchfire "Clear" and adjust Sensitivity up to an acceptable clutter level...
Switchfire "Max" and adjust Sensitivity down to an acceptable clutter level...
