insufficient memory / can't remove nav.data?
« on: December 17, 2011, 08:56:55 AM »
I try to upload the waypoints from Humminbird PC to my 998CSI
I get the message that there is insufficient memory and that not all waypoints and routes can be loaden.
The +.ht file is only 5 kb?

I have the unit not connected in the boat but on a accu in the house.
When I delete all nav.data then the unit will place the data back in a few minutes, althougd this nav data is not on a SD card?
I delete the nav.data, reset it to factory settings and still the nav.data will appear on the screen?

I'm getting a little tired of this, have spend several days to locate the problem.

Anyone a good suggestion?

Kees from Holland

I haven't tried this theory yet, but are you on the latest unit software and humminbird pc? I wonder if it has to do with the waypoint management stuff.

The unit has the latest software and Humminbird PC is also the latest version.
Waypointmanagement does not work on the 998 yet.

Kees,
You are powering your unit off of a power supply in your house right?
You do not have a transducer or anything else connected to it right?

My guess to both questions above are “Yes” and that your unit is powering on in the point-of-purchase Simulator mode.  When running in this mode there are no permanent changes remembered; so deleting the waypoints and powering the unit back on (or allowing it to run for over two minutes without pressing a button) will have the unit going back to the settings and all that it had when powered on.  In your case that means that it still has the waypoints in its active memory.

Try this:
1.  Press the power button to power the unit on as you normally would.
2.  While the unit is showing the start-up Title Screen (shows something like: Humminbird 998cx Si”; press the MENU button.
3.  After a few moments the screen should show three menu options: Normal, Simulator and System Status.  Use the Up/Down Arrows to highlight “Simulator” and than use the Right Arrow to activate it.
When the unit finishes starting up it will be in the forced Simulator mode in which it will remember everything that you do to it – just as if you were on the water.

Hello Greg,

I have connected the unit in my garage in the boat with transducer and GPS antenna, no GPS signal but I think that that doesn't matter?
Removed both the SD cards and removes all waypoints.
Than the waypoint are gone. When I insert the SD card with the nav data the unit gives the screen as shown in the attached picture? "insuficient memory to load all nav.data"
Unfortunately my boat is away for maintrenance at this moment.

I will try your suggestion with the simulation and will get back with the results in a few days.

Thanks for the reply

Kees.

My 997c says the same thing after powering up also. It does load all of the waypoints I have on the SD card. I am not sure what the actual error message is about.

The only thing that I can think of that may be causing this is a corrupt waypoint.  Save the waypoints as a *.gpx file onto your computer using HumminbirdPC and than try uploading them to the memory card again.  That may catch the corrupt waypoint.

Otherwise, if either of you do not mind: send the *.gpx file to me and I will see if I can get someone in our Engineering department to look into it.

The +.ht file is only 5 kb?

The HT-File is damaged. Size of the HT-File is always 128kBytes. If the messages doesn't disappear, you have to reinstall the firmware. Note that the HT-File doesn't contain waypoints.

Ok. After going through most of my waypoints, I have found the bad one and left it out and now it loads fine. It would give me an error during bootup but not when the unit was already turned on. So, it was a bad waypoint after all. Thanks

The bad waypoint had a datecode of year 1969.

LocDown,
Was the date code the only thing that was “bad” about this waypoint?  Lat/Lon, name and icon were all okay?

I believe so. I had created that waypoint from Google maps, exported it and then imported it into Humminbird PC.

This is what I did sofar today:

- Connected the unit in the boat, selected simulator mode
- removed all the nav data
- In Humminbird PC created a new file contents 1 track and 154 waypoints.
The *.ht file is now 129 kb
- Checked all the waypoints on name, date etc. Could not find anything wrong.
- Turned the unit on without SD card, selected the simulator mode and entered the SD card.

Unit responds good!! loaded 1 track and 154 waypoints, no error-message!

I am so  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the great support!

Try powering on with the card inserted to see if the error meager pops up.
