Title: SAR TRANSDUCER UPGRADE ADVICE NEEDED
Post by: edwin81 on February 24, 2017, 10:03:42 AM
HI Folks

We run the humminbrid 1198c with the XHS-9-HDSI 180T transducer .... we are looking to upgrade the transducer for search and recovery purposes in mind. Or to possibly just purchase a second transducer the same if no upgrade is possible.

Any information on an upgradable transducer would be great.
Many thanks

There isn't any other transducer manufactured by Humminbird

There is no other transducer manufactured by Humminbird that will work with the 1198 that is better than the HDSI transducer ..... as abraquelebout indicated there are other ways to be creative.

Hi Edwin

An upgrade for the Transducher is not available, but you can switch to the latest generation Solix 15 Si. The associated Transducher with 1200Khz should allow a fantastic resolution in the close range. For the use at sea, however, you should build a Towfish.

Some users state better image performance using the dual XHS 9 HDSI 180 T Setup using the AS SILR Y cable ...

The performance of the HB transducer for SAR leave a lot to be desired. If you are using the system in less than 40 feet of water and under 50 feet of depth with a side scan of 80 feet you will find some benefit with the system. And that depends on the amount of debris on the bottom.
Once you get over the above limits the system is difficult to portray the image you are looking for in SAR.
Another issue is the frequency of the transmitter.
HB is just now maybe starting to understand the relationship of transduce length and frequency to target display.
For SAR purposes, as stated in previous posts, the best uses will be in the limits as above. If you get outside of those then getting the transducer closer to the bottom in the use of a towfish will improve the display.

thanks for all the replies.....

We use in on our local river mostly on a low tide iscan vary from 2m to 6 m on a high tide it can vary from 10 to 16m depending on the stretch of water. the width of the rive goes from 60m to 120 m. Another unit in out are uses  a tow fish not sure what manufacturer but they paid big big money for it and ours is producing far better quality images and definition of the bottom
