I'm a new user here so a little background first.
I've currently got a 10+ year old Lowrance X85 with the transducer mounted on my boats transom and also have a transducer built into the bottom of my bow-mounted Minnkota trolling motor, also 10+ years old. I have a switch mounted near the bow that's allows me to switch between the two transducers.
This past weekend, I picked up my first side imaging unit, a 798ci HD SI COMBO. I'm not to interested in the hassle involved with a though-hull installation but I'd like to hear your pros/cons regarding locating the transducer on the trolling motor or transom.
If I decide to mount the 798ci transducer to the trolling motor can I still run the X85 from the transom or will the two units interfere with each other?

The 200kHz sonar from each unit can interfere with each other. No guarantees that it will happen and you can try turning on and up the Noise Filter menu on the 798ci unit if it shows on it. Otherwise you may have to turn the sonar on one unit off to keep it from happening.
The best Si sonar images come from a transducer that is moving at a steady pace and is pointed straight forwards. This lends itself more to a transom mounted transducer and this is where I recommend new Si sonar users start. However, it does not allow you to look around the boat without spinning the entire boat around and shows sonar from 20 feet away (or whatever your boat length is) from where most normally fish. For sonar readings from where you are fishing and the ability to scan an area before you pass beside it; trolling motor mounting is the best option. However, be forewarned that the images will not be the same as they are when transom mounted. Search this and other web sites for plenty of Si images from trolling motor and transom mounted transducers.
