Brand new 1198c SI giving me fits
« on: June 15, 2013, 11:57:12 PM »
New to the website and very informative site. I really need some help before I pull out what's left of my hair.

I purchased a new 1198c SI and 1158c Di. (I previously owned a 997 linked with 777 and a vey happy Humminbird owner) Currently my 1158 is working great with no issues.

My 1198 does not show depth at all, the dealer replaced the thru hull and still no luck. GPS works great, Temperature works great, Side imaging is very poor and no down image at all. I just installed the newest update just to be safe and no luck. Is there something I'm missing (a setting maybe?) is there any suggestions or anyone else experience these issues?

I also removed the thru hull to use only the SI and no depth reading either?!?!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

Are you on the water when testing or off the water? Some of the newer updates won't show depth until you're on the water.

The SI has to have the 2D for the SI to work correctly......Do you know anyone with an 1198 that you could test your unit on their boat?
That would help determine whether you have a transducer problem or a problem with the unit.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Under the sonar menu, have you selected the
correct type of transducer you are using?
Also, double-check the Max depth setting (also under the sonar menu).
It should be set to at least 10 feet deeper than any
water you will be in.

mlangford,
We need some additional information and some pictures to be able to help you more.

Which thru hull transducer is connected to your 1198 unit?
Was the thru hull transducer water tested before it was epoxied in place?
Did they use the epoxy that comes with the transducer from Humminbird or something else?
How are the two transducers connected to your 1198 unit?

Try plugging the thru hull transducer straight into the 1198 unit (not through any y-cables or switches) and see if the 2D sonar gets better or not.

Testing your 1198 unit on someone else’s boat would be the best.  They would not need to have another 1198 unit as any of the Si units would work to test this with.  Plug in just the power cable and transducer for the test if they are a different model of unit.  If you do not know of anyone else, try plugging your 1198 into your 1158c DI’s transducer and test it (only one side of the Si will work) to see if one side of the Si sonar and the 2D sonar works correctly or not.
