Extracting/Editing Track(HT)
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:49:29 AM »
Well asking a lot of questions and not getting a lot of answers. Here is another. I have areas, in this case a river, in my area, that for unknown reasons a segment right in the middle of the NVB chart there is a 16 mile stretch without any data shown on the GPS. I ran that stretch yesterday and took numerous snapshots and created a track. I used HB PC to view data and everything is fine on display on Google Earth, except that annoying "flyaway" to an area far removed from the track location. This is apparently due to the unit being turned off and then back on during tracking. I did this manually - not a problem in the unit. Since I don't have a chart for this segment I would like to use the track I created yesterday, so that at the least I can see the general location on the GPS -this is a very torturous river with severe horseshoe curves and cutoffs. At least being able to see where the river track is in dark or obscure conditions is a plus.  Question. Is there any program or procedure that is available to edit the track(HT) file. I want to edit the "flyaways" and unneeded track data and then reload to the unit. HB Pc does not allow editing of the "raw" HT files and once uploaded to HB Pc, the  "GPX" data structure of the file is closed and not editable. This then produces a track in HB Pc of the track with all the errors and junk I need to edit out. :(

Wall-E,

Welcome to the forum. There is no program that I know of that will do what you are asking.  The only way would be to manually edit the files.  The GPX file is basically an XML file and can be edited.

With GPSBabel you should be able to convert the ht Files to a lot of other Formats and after editing back to ht.
So if you find any Editor you like,
just look at GPSBabel at http://www.gpsbabel.org
Maybe it can convert it to the format used by your favorite editor.

For example, i used GPSBabel for converting Google kml into gpx to build shore areas and islands to load as tracks into the HB Unit because of missing Maps for my region.

Thanks Robert and Pebe

I found that it was easier to do a track in Google Earth and convert using GPSbabel to ".HT" file. Did the job for me and will use it regularly.

Thanks
Jeff
