Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
User selectable configurable system, with each update - For all models, not just SI models
Explanation:
When we do a software update, we should
have the choice of what we want to install.
I want a bare bones system, with just
Maps/GPS, 2D, Weathersense, and XM weather.
I do not want SI, or DI, or Ipilot, or 360, or anything else.  I don't even want the damned simulator.

With the Windows operating system, when you install most new software, it asks you what features you want.

I know this would be extremely complicated, but I bet my unit would fly without the extra stuff I don't use.  There would be far less menus, and the choices would be less, with overall less clutter on the system.

If I change my mind, and later want SI, I would just have to do the update again, and choose SI.

I think Humminbird should start moving in this direction.  For most users, it would make their machines more responsive.

At least let us run Chart/SI/DI together so we can see them all without having to buy another HD head and networking. Lowrance can do it! Why not Humminbird?

If you just want a bare bones unit.....buy a bare bones unit, or just stay with the software that comes with your unit.  There is no mandate to update the software.

The problem is that all these features "play together."  For instance, in order to accommodate the 360, the raw data is actually processed differently in the new update than it was previously.  This happens regardless of whether you have a 360 or not.    These are not separate applications, the features are all one application.
There would have to be 150 different versions of the software to accommodate anything like what you are talking about....you want to talk about a testing nightmare.

When you install Microsoft Excel, you don't have the option to remove "data sort" from the application, or decide that you only want to accommodate 10 cells, etc, etc.

I guarantee you this one isn't going to happen....Think I have heard that somewhere before.

If you want a big screen with accurate GPS, you have to
buy a unit that has all the bellls and whistles, even though
you may only want a few features.

The code could be MACROnized, which means it's broken down
to the very smallest of routines, and then the needed routines
can be installed, based on what the user selects.

It would be extremely complicated, but if Humminbird starts
this now, maybe in 5 years or so, they could have it finished.

It all depends on how good the Humminbird programmers are, and
if Humminbird has a burning desire to improve their product or not.

@ITGEEK, You seem to imply you know coding. Since this software is open source maybe you could write your own!

While the Linux operating system may be open source, HB's implementation of it IS NOT open source, it is proprietary. If it were at least partially open source (at least screen drivers, NMEA, networking etc) things quite possibly would be amazing....

Think about it:

Fully customizable screen layouts.....
Fully bi-directional NMEA2000 communications....

Add wishes here.....

Scott,
I do coding to process biomedical data.
I know absolutely nothing about coding for
sonars/maps/gps.
I wish I did though.
