I have had my 798 for about 11 months now and since day one it has occasionally shown this problem.  Sometimes the rights side will be a lot darker than the left.  I end up having to adjust my sensitivity all the way up to 16-18 just to get any detail.  I have also experienced a problem where at depths over 15ft or so the bottom is so faint I once again  have to turn the sensitivity way up again.  This doesn't seem to happen every time I'm out, but it is becoming more often.  I have a Ranger with a True Thru hull transducer mounted on the 15" setback.  No obstructions, Voltage supply is always good, boat level, little to no turbulence.  Any help is greatly appreciated!  Here are some pics.

Oh, and I ordered two of these.  One for myself and one for my uncle.  He is also beginning to experience the same issues.  I was gonna use his to figure out if it was my unit or transducer, but now I can't cause his has the same issue.  Since the problem doesn't  happen every time I don't know if it would help anyway!

Looks to me as if the xducer's attitude is rotated counterclockwise from level causing the right SI beam to shoot higher in the water column than the left SI beam...

Can you post pix of your Xducer install both from the back and from each side level with the Xducer...??

Interesting boat setup...looks about as level as possible...

Testing another unit head on your boat is still going to be the best determination of problems with your head unit or your Xducer....

Some of the other guys should be checking in soon if they have more suggestions for you...

When it works its awesome, but when it flakes out its really frustrating.  Found the mounting config on the net and was a great fit for my Ranger setback.  Just wish I could get it lined out and working every time. Thanks for the replys!

I wonder if the transducer is starting to fail.

This is all too concerning as I too have the same issues + left SS having 'lines' appearing.

Will watch this post with great interest.

Any of the SI units can be used to cross-test this...(it doesn't have to be a 798)...

The "occasional" fault issue...and the fact that the left side of the SI image looks fine would probably indicate that "something" is failing...

Cross-testing with another known working SI unit will still be the best indicator if the unit is at fault or the Xducer is at fault...

Here's a better idea, 'cause the only bloke I know who owns one is 800kms north, how about the humminbird rep swings past my joint with a model to try?     [insert Australian humour here]

Thinking I will just send the unit into Humminbird to look at.  I looked a little more around the internet and this seems to be a pretty common issue.  What's going on with these things?  This is the most money I've ever spent on a sonar unit and the most problems I've ever had with one as well.  I'm not too satisfied.  Thinking Humminbird may not be a purchase I make in the future.  The unit my uncle has has already been sent in once because it kept rebooting.  Now we both have this issue.  Humminbird must have made a bad batch of these dudes apparently.  Thanks again for all the input guys!  Greatly appreciated!

Tens of thousands of these units get purchased every year...

Good stories rarely get published...
Bad stories always do...

HB will take care of it...

Your correct but after reading about another member on this site 'creating new transducers' which means cutting into perfectly working transducers and seeing how the crystals where offset and regularly u do start to wonder when these things become a constant theme....

If you notice the picture of the unused mooring pic the lines are on the DS and Lft SS.

The problem is since I have a thru hull transducer I had to glue it.  So now if I have to replace the tx I will probably be lucky if I don't tare my boat up.  Hopefully it's in the head unit. My luck it's not gonna be.  Thanks for all the info!

Please post the final outcome. I experienced the same problem my last time out fishing in 2012. Thanks in advance!

Well, sent both units into HB and they sent them back and told me there was nothing found wrong.  Funny thing is they also sent me some other guys sonar with them.  So now some poor guy in Minnesota is missing his sonar.  What a joke! Guess I will give them a try and if its no better just send the transducers back.  This year is starting out real nice!

Just a thought.  The pins on the HB connectors are notorious for poor connections, especially on the power cable.  It could be possible that you have a week connection on the right SI pin.  I would remove the cable and with a small flat head screwdriver, gently push the pins outward to try and improve the connection and see if this works.
