899 turning off when cranking motor
« on: December 31, 2014, 05:57:46 PM »
I'm pretty sure it's dirty terminals but I'm wondering if there is any chance of this damaging the machine??
I love this machine.

The units are designed to shut off in a low power situation ...to prevent damage ...

Dirty terminals can be the issue ...

It could also be the battery is not in good enough condition to take the needed amps for cranking the big motor and run the electronics also ...

Load testing the battery is the best diagnosis for battery condition ...

Thanks Rickie. I'll have it load tested tomorrow.

If it worked before and isn't now, I'd bet the battery is going fast.
I run really heavy wire to my units so I don't get any power sag to drop them out when I hit the key.....
G'Luck with it.

Low voltage on the battery.  Probably going bad or got a bad cell.  And yes, it will screw up the unit and/or GPS antenna.

Amperage distribution is all important. Think of it this way. A car needs a large amount of amps to start the engine. Even with a good battery when you press the start key notice how lights in the car seem to dim or even go out. that is the large draw needed to start. This is the same with starting a boat motor. It pulls a lot of current. For boats and sonar it is why the recommendation is to have two batteries. One for the motor and one for the sonar.  It is just the way that volts/current work.  So by all means make sure the supply is charged and has not gone low.... Chuck

I cleaned the connections and it seemed to fix the problem. Fished yesterday and it done fine. My battery has a purchase sticker on it from 5/06 so it's time to replace it regardless. Plan to get a new and higher cca battery this week. If for no other reason, just peace of mind. Thanks everyone.
