Can I take the SD card from my 898 and put in my 598 to transfer waypoint data?

Yes, you can export Nav Data on one unit and import it on another.

I tried to export the data from the 898 and then put the card in the 598 and it would not import the waypoints.

Was the 598 unit on or off when you installed the memory card?
Have you successfully used that memory card in the 598 and 898 units before (like make a Screen Snapshot and look at it it in the unit you made it in)?

yes the 598 was on before I put the card in. I CA. see the waypoints on the card when I insert it in my PC using Hummingbirds PC.  I have. bother the 898 and 598 on my boat and I thought I could just export the data to the card andplace it in the other unit bandit would import the waypoints.

It should but it sometimes gets back to the software versions that each unit is using.  Try:
Installing the memory card before you power the 598 unit on.
With the 598 unit; make a screen snapshot using that same memory card – then view the screen snapshot on the 598 unit.  This will tell us if the memory card is being recognized and can be written to and read from as well.

it can be written to because I created a waypoint on the 598 and exported it to card and placed in the 899 and it imported the waypoint

Written to and read from are different functions though.  Be sure that it can also read from the memory card but try installing it with the unit off first.
