Title: Trolling motor interference
Post by: Sigler on February 26, 2011, 07:22:10 PM
I know I am full of questions but when I first hit the trolling motor I get interference on my front graph (788ci di). The wires for the trolling motor are ran down the passanger side of the boat and the graph wires are ran down the driver side and they are not connected to the same battery. I also have the noise button set on high 3. I wish one of you guys from Humminbird was fishing with me so I could get all this stuff worked out. LOL   I also couldnt figure out why when I am going to a waypoint the water depth would bounce up and down and it seemed like the waypoint kept moving around in dfferent directions.

A couple of things come to mind....
If you are navigating using the trolling motor make sure the transducer is staying in the water. If it is mounted on the bottom of the ducer it should be staying down but just check for bounce..
If you speed is lerss than .5 mph the gps may wander especially if using the older gps puck.
Also make sure the gps receiver signal is not being blocked.

Pictures of mounting will be helpful

Todd,

Give Humminbird a call, they have a TM interference kit they will send you.  Do you have common ground wires?

All I no is the trolling motor is ran to the back down the passager side and the graph is hook up to the fuse panel by the steering wheel. If I was guessing I would say there is a common ground.

Its important to isolate it completely to get rid of any interference and even then you may still get some emi.  The TM interference kit will certainly help.  I dont think they charge you!

I don’t think that they will send you the trolling motor interference kit Sigler.  This is what I have been told about RF interference on the new DI units:
“The first step is to get consumer services to send him a PC 11 with the choke built in.  Then need to make sure he has no connection between cranking and trolling motor battery.  If it is a universal sonar motor the #1 reason for interference is the fuse in the head of the motor being blown.”

I dont no were the fuse would be to check it there are breakers back at the battery. Its a 24 volt TM.

It would be in the head of the trolling motor.  Check the operations manual for your trolling motor to see if they show its location or additional info.
