I don’t have a 798ci HD Si unit here to check it with but I would say that was not normal.  Have you tried the unit with the transducer connected up to it (even out of the water) and gotten any 83kHz sonar data?

Thanks Greg
I just tried with the transducter connected and i see only surface clarity but in the 2 windows of frequencies
Another thing perhapps will help u about to identify my problem when i put fish id on the fish dont are always instead of arches
Do u think there is a problem with the soft?
I already tried to restore settings

All my thanks Greg for helping me
And congratulations to u for work done on this site

It could be that there was something wrong with the simulator data that did not get loaded to your unit.  If that is so than the unit may work fine on the water but just not show anything in the simulated 83kHz data.  Loading a new software update does not change the simulator data so your only choice is to try it on the water to see if it works or not.

Thanks for all Greg
I cant go on water, boat is home and weather not good
What do u think i should do (even if unit is OK on water)
Does i keep my unit or does i should return it for repair ?
Does this unit will not have other problems in future ?

I thank you one more time for helping me

If you can contact the retailer you bought it from you may see if they will just swap out the unit for another one.  If not, and it checks out good on the water, then I would probably just keep it.  We have no way of knowing if something else is not working properly until it hits the water but if that is the only problem you find it won’t affect the operation of the unit.  If you were in the U.S. I would say to just call up Humminbird and send the unit in, but you are in France and I don’t know how good of service you will get over there.  If that is a domestic version 798ci HD Si they may refuse to service the unit.

I have exactly the same issue. The 83hz works fine on water, just not in demo mode.

The unit is fine..... My 798 also don't have any data on the simulator on the 83kHz. Must be a firmware size issue with the 798 SI unit.

Unit works perfectly fine on the water though!

Don't have it on my 998c either V6.49. Makes following part of Doug's Advanced Part2 video hard to use....... Bummer.... ::)

i heard from a reliable source that the 83khz was removed to free up space in the processor and associated circuits

That would be why some of us are seeing it and some are not.  The newer simulation data does not have any 83kHz sonar recorded with it.

If true..... This is somewhat disturbing.... That would mean HB underestimated the amount of storage needed in these units..... They will start becoming obsolete much quicker as a result ....... ???

I think it would be a good thing to remove the simulations
altogether.  There's no telling how much memory that would free up.

Humminbird could set up simulations on their web site,
if someone really wanted to use them.

Simulations are just wasting resources on the units.

This would also free up time for the Humminbird programmers.
They'd have more time to make the updates better, and
more time to check them before releasing them.

It would be great if Humminbird would give users an option to
completely remove the simulations from their machines.

Good points....
The simulators are important features at points of sale though.
The simulations very likely seldom get used once people get used to their units.....
Straw

Edit:

However we are also seeing that lots of people are testing new firmware updates in simulator.... An important tool as it is not always easy to get on the lake for that.

The proper option would have been for HB to allow plenty of storage in the design of their motherboards.

These are very good points..A few years ago Lowrance and several other had dealer demo units that had simulators on them..  The one you bought from them did not. I am not sure HB is listening to the users any more. Most is what they decide we want and not need..
Web site support is a bit lacking in the HB site..And it is often behind in dateing material..

My personal thoughts – not Humminbird’s/JOI’s:
I would like to see them eliminate the built-in simulated data altogether as well.  Have some sonar recordings that could be downloaded from the Humminbird web site and allow them to be loaded into the internal memory of the unit.  Users can load them if they want or not.  Of course that means the sales people at all the stores would have to learn how to download a file and load it into the Humminbird units…

I’m sure that when the current units were originally designed that no one had any idea how much memory would be needed in the coming years.  I think that the recent feature and accessory additions has taken up more room than anyone thought and than again maybe not and this was done for some other reason (maybe the 83kHz was simply not recorded).  I just would not have thought that the elimination of the 83kHz sonar data from the simulator would have caused such an issue.  The 83kHz still works when on the water, does it not?

As for Humminbird not listening to its Customers: just because you did not get the special feature that you wanted or if a new feature or change does not meet your expectations – that does not mean that Humminbird does not listen to its Customers.

What lacking support at the Humminbird web site this time Chuck?

What lacking support at the Humminbird web site this time Chuck?

Availibility of back level code.
Consistency in customer questions and answers from email.
Pre announcement of products when shipping is not available or target is not met.
Not addressing code ship defects soon enough.

Just a few...but it seems the everyday customer is neglected.

We have not had back level code in years Chuck, so this is nothing new.  If you want an older version of code you can try contacting them and ask for it.

You are going to get this anytime you have humans answering questions Chuck.  We do try and have group training.  When something like this happens we also try and find out who it was that passed on the incorrect information and take the needed steps to correct it.

We don’t have an area of the web site to announce shipping dates for products (I can’t think of many that do).  This could be something that we may or may not be able to add.  I would recommend you add this to the Humminbird Wish List.

What is “soon enough”?  Personally I don’t want any defects in the code but I don’t know if that is possible and still stay on the cutting edge that our Customers want.  New features and accessories require new code and these things have to happen quickly or the competition comes out with it first.  I will agree that our testing does not always uncover every problem with the code but delaying the release of the code is not a good option either: just do a search for the posts when the 360 Imaging was delayed.  That being said I’m sure that we will try and do better.

Now we are way, way off subject for this post.  Anyone else care if we get back to it?
