798 CI SI causing vhf interference
« on: August 07, 2015, 08:21:19 PM »
After reading several posts here, I called then sent my 798 CI SI (2010 vintage) to Alabama to have the "fix".
I've lived with just having to keep my handheld vhf 5 feet or so away from my console.
But I recently put in a fixed mount vhf under my console (about 2' from the 798), and now have constant issues (no surprise).
It seems to be much worse on channel 16, than other channels...

Good news, Humminbird support turned it around in 2 days in house, door to door in a week.
No charge, other than shipping from my end.
Work order says "modified for VHF interference"

Bad news, it's still not fixed.  Same issue with both the handheld, and fixed mount.
It comes and goes as I move the 798 back and forth, but it always comes back...  Strange.

I'll be calling Alabama back Monday morning, but was wondering if anyone has not been able to get this resolved...

Called support today.   The very polite lady I spoke with, asked her supervisor several questions for me, although, I could not get transferred up the ladder.  The fix is, they install ferrite beads, somewhere in the unit, to mask the RF noise.  After explaining that it is not a boat wire issue (i.e. I can recreate the issue on my desk), I agreed to send it back to Alabama, this time, I also sent in my ICOM handheld VHF, as they have no radios there to try to recreate the issue.   They should have it Wednesday, I'll post an update when I hear something.

Greg, if you're still around, can you add any insight?  Or talk to the techs and see what's happening?

Gary
