998c Transducer showing Not Connected on power up
« on: March 13, 2016, 05:12:47 PM »
When I power up unit I get a TRANSDUCER NOT CONNECTED message.
Sometimes I can run the boat a little and the unit will power up find ?
Sounds like loose connection maybe ? I'm not sure
I would appreciate any help on this problem.

Bend the pins ever so slightly in the xducer cable connector to try and get a better contact of the pins in the socket ...

Be careful ...the pins break easy ...so don't bend much at all ...

I tried bending pins. No good. Took connector apart that attaches to back of unit. Cables looked good. I was going to put transducer in 5 gallon bucket of water and found transducer was sticking straight up. Took transducer off bracket and put in top of bucket of water and turned unit on. Same message Transducer not Connected. Could sensor being straight up give me this message ? Is there away of ohming out transducer pins that would tell me if cable is good ?

I'm not understanding "sticking straight up" ...do you mean the xducer was vertical in the mounting bracket like it may have hit something in the water ..??

Yes the transducer was vertical like it hit something. I fish a lake that has stumps around the banks
I will be fishing and the boat will get hung on a stump and I will have to back up to get boat dislodged from stump.

You can try crosstesting with another head unit or another xducer if you have access to either one ...

If you don't have access to either call HB ...

I appreciate your help RNVINC.
To test with another transducer it would have to be compatible for a 998c unit correct ?
I have two black/white gps hummingbird finders. One in the drivers console and the other on the front deck used on the trolling motor.

You can test xducer connection with any HB xducer that has the "house shaped" xducer cable connector end ...

I disconnected cables off of the HB unit on the front deck and connected to my 998c unit. Pressed on and the unit started up and gave me the same message Transducer not Connected. So we can eliminate the Tranducer cable being bad on the 998c unit. Problem is in the unit itself.

UPDATE
I wanted to download all my waypoints onto a card so they would not be lost. Carried unit out to boat and just plugged the cables into the back of unit. I didn't tighten up thumb screw for the cable unit I just pushed cable unit into the back of unit. I inserted card and pushed the on button and yes you guessed it the 998 powered up with no messages. The unit was reading the transducer ?
I tried many configurations, back up card in/out, tightened thumb screw down/ loose, mounted on ram mount/ off of mount etc..  I couldn't get the unit to not start up with a fault message. Unit works find ? Now I know this want last but only thing I can figure is there is a loose connection somewhere ? Just don't want to pay a $380 repair fee for a loose connection (Per HB repair site).

Sounds definitely like a connection issue ...

You can try bending the pins more ... Just be careful with them ...
