Topic: hobie mounting

hi, i am thinking of mounting my 898 in my hobie outback, now i need another transducer, do i have to buy the  exact same one that came with the unit, or is there another option that will give me the same performance?Does any body have any experience with using side imaging from a hobie, if so any advice as where to mount the transducer would be appreciated.

Tre...it all depends on what you want the unit to do fore you.
Remember that si has some issues with speed over 5 or 6 mph.
Let us know what you want to see or do. What you expect the unit to show..

If you want the same sharp looking 455kHz Si sonar images as well as the 800kHz Si images, than you will have to use one of the HDSi transducers.  There are transom mount, trolling motor mount and Thru-Hull versions but they will all work the same (the transom and trolling motor versions are the same transducers but come with different mounting hardware).  The Thru-Hull mounts under the boat through a hole in the hull – not so sure you want to do that on your Hobie.

If you can live without the 800kHz Si sonar and don’t mind the 455kHz Si sonar being less sharp; you can use one of the Compact Side Imaging transducers that is meant for the 797/798 units.  They come in the transom or trolling motor mounted versions as well.

Is this a sailboat, ‘Yak or what?

There have been a few posts on this or other boards about ‘Yak installations and use of Si units.

Hobi is a small pontoon type sail boat.
I think he will have Si depth problem as his speed will be above what is normally considered SI speed.
Again we need to know what he wants the sonar for before we can comment too much on his post...

hi guys, thanks for the replies, my Hobie outback is a foot peddled model, going over the speed will not be a problem, i am mostly wanting to scan some creeks that i fish, maybe use to 2d if i ever get up the courage to go into open water(i nearly did but a great white was spotted the day i was planning to go).What would be the minimum size battery i would need to run the unit?

TG you should be fine on the paddle boat with speed 
Battery could be a motorcycle battery or a car battery or a marine battery.  What ever you want in cost.
Dont forget to instsll the fuse on the positive side.

TG is that the mirage type you have? 
Several of the guys here have put the sonar on their kayaks and it should be fine for you...

great thanks guys,yep its the mirage drive, just need to figure out where to place the transducer,i can mount it at the rear via ram mounts but i`m not sure if the rudder will be in the way, triall & error i guess but i`m not that keen on drilling unnecessary hole in plastic hull.

TG  check around this forum  A while back a guy posted pictures of his mount thru the kayak with a sliding pole.  If I can find that I will try to post back to you.

Darrel, thanks,those should help.  I have been looking for the post of the kayak mounted sonar where the guy used a pole thru the center of the kayak. do you recall this?

TG...searching is an art and takes some creative words. Sometimes putting the word(s) in quote "" marks helps to string several words together.
The search engine on this forum is pretty good but it does not always search within the body of the posting.
Just like the internet you have to keep trying different words until you find what you are looking for or decide that it is not there.

There is a tremendous amount of posting on this forum and it does take some creativity in finding things.
thankfully there are a lot of users who regularly sign on and are continually helping foks who post questions.
