I Need Some HELP!!!
« on: August 11, 2011, 10:19:17 AM »
Can someone please post a list of what equipment (cables, power converters, etc...) I need in order to connect my 1197 and 998 units directly to my computer.  My system runs Windows 7 and I have card readers and USB ports.

Please post a DETAILED list of the equipment, along with DETAILED instructions on how to connect it. Also, knowing where to purchase the equipment would be very helpful.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason.

Perhaps this can be addressed in FAQ's and if you want to move this post to that topic.

Jason,
How are you wanting to use this connection between your Humminbird unit and computer?

I want to be able to use my HB unit in my home, instead of having to go out to the garage to update waypoints, make trails, ect...

You will need to buy an extra power cable and a 1.5 amp 12v power supply.

Here is good topic that list some power supplies. http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=112.msg674#msg674

I keep a lot of old power supplies for electronics and happen to have one that was 1amp that I use for my 997.  The 1198 will draw a little more power on startup than the 997 though, so at least 1.5 amp is recommended.

I use a 7.2 aH motorbike lead-acid battery wherever and whenever I use my unit, especially when I do firmware updates. Connection to main batteries in your vessel will cause interference issues and connection to an eliminator in your home will present a (small) risk for the consequences of a power failure (a dead sonar if it happens during an update). Keep your system isolated from all other systems at all times!

Once you get the Power Cable (PC-11) and a good power source, all you will need is an SD memory card.  For navigational data transfers you do not need a very large or fast memory card.  A 1GB SD memory card would be overkill but you may have a problem finding one smaller than that now.
